EX500

I have a Motorola EX500 UHF that had a good battery.I bought a used rapid charger and put the radio in to top up the battery.
Several hours later, the chargers craddle was very hot and the battery and radio are now dead.I checked the radio with a known good battery and still will not power up.
The charger was the correct one for that radio. The transformer has an out put of 18v ,so I'm guessing the craddle is defective.
Would there be a internal diode/fuse in the radio that may have blown ?
