I've got a Quantar which doesn't seem to want to update here...
Firmware was originally at 20.xx.xxx. I think I made my mistake when I clicked on "Erase" at the beginning of the firmware update.
After it was finished erasing, the updater said:
"Firmware Download Aborted due to Invalid Backplane ID."
The only way I can communicate with the device is when I set the SLIP connection to 9600bps. 38,400 says something about "connection not in phonebook". I've set everything up as per the instructions in the Quantar upgrade guide.
All of the LEDs on the front of the SCM are blinking on/off. i.e. it's dead. The SCM was working fine before the failed update.
Anyone know how I can recover from this situation?

Wow. It sounds like you bit the weenie ( that is a highly technicial term for "oops") The Blinking lights on the SCM are showing you that the board is in boot load mode. I'm really surprised that the backplane ID is missing. Have you tried to power cycle the station, and go back in to upgrade the firmware? If you try and "read" the station with the RSS, does it "read" at all, or say the station isn't responding? As far as the 9600 baud goes, that is the typical speed for the SLIP connection. I have also used 10Base 2 card (PCMCIA) for the laptop and have very good luck with that method of firmware upgrades. Its much faster too. At this point, I'd contact the product group and ask them for advise.apx911 wrote:I've got a Quantar which doesn't seem to want to update here...

I'm sure they have heard from others in the past with the same thing. I personally don't know any way to fool the
backplane checking portion of the RSS to allow you to get past this.

Re: "Firmware Download Aborted" - Quantar
Thank you for your advice, wa6ylb. I have tried re-upgrading the station and it's unable to communicate past the Invalid Backplane ID error.
I'm trying some other suggestions from other board members, but if all else fails, I'm going to try yanking out the AM29F040B flash ROMs from the SIMM module and manually re-flashing them with an out-of-circuit programmer/adapter. I'm fortunate enough to have some images provided to me from another source. Unknown if this will fix the problem, but there's nothing to lose at this point. I'll update this thread if I get it working.
Thank you to everyone who has sent a message with suggestions. I am grateful for your assistance.

Sounds to me like you're using an upgrade kit that was created for another station. Firmware upgrades for the Quantar are specific to the Quantar they were purchased for.

Wasn't there a magical batch or an ID that would work for any Quantar because of some Motorola snafu back in the day?d119 wrote:Sounds to me like you're using an upgrade kit that was created for another station. Firmware upgrades for the Quantar are specific to the Quantar they were purchased for.

Not that I recall... Wouldn't mind knowing about it though!escomm wrote:Wasn't there a magical batch or an ID that would work for any Quantar because of some Motorola snafu back in the day?d119 wrote:Sounds to me like you're using an upgrade kit that was created for another station. IIRC some users did get this open upgrade. I had a few my Quantars upgraded that way a few years ago, and that is what I was told.escomm wrote: Wasn't there a magical batch or an ID that would work for any Quantar because of some Motorola snafu back in the day?
