PTT input to soft console

Post by boteman »

Has anybody found a good way to get a PTT switch indication into a PC running a soft console?

It seems like there ought to be a USB gizmo that takes a switch input and stuffs a character in the keyboard buffer or similar to key up the soft console. Anybody found anything, because I sure haven't.

Thanks.

I would think something like this would be application-specific. When you say "Soft Console", that's kind of a generic term... What application or platform are you specifically using? This might help us answer your question.

It's a non-Motorola soft console that can take user-defined keystrokes to perform certain functions, such as "key select channel" or "mute unselect audio" or whatnot. I could write something to monitor a serial line and send a keystroke, but I'm essentially lazy. If somebody else already offers such a product I'll just buy it. That's what I'm looking for.

Heh, if nothing turns up maybe I'll build a better mousetrap and retire on the profits. :-)

The first thing I would do is contact the software manufacturer and inquire as to whether or not they have an interface for this. In Centracom Gold Elite, all of that is done in multiple places - front panel PTT on the CIE, 6-wire headset jackbox PTT, footswitch, instant transmit icon, general transmit icon, etc.

I would think that the console manufacturer would have a hardware interface available for things like headsets and deskmics that would allow you to do this. Even the "pure-IP" Motorola console (MCC 7500) has a VPM that contains interfaces for all of that.

Motorola MIP5000 is a "soft console" and it has PTT input via the Enhanced USB headset box.

I looked a "Twisted Pair" brand console and they didn't have anything available for what I would call standard console inerface (such as a proper heaset interface that transfered headset audio to phone upon a flag input).

This is where a lot of these "soft console" manufacturers fall down. they don't seem to have any real life dispatch experience.
