MIP 5000 new install
We're getting ready to convert a dispatch center from a Command Plus to the MIP5000. They have one position, with adding an additional remote position (still to be determined where). Most of the radios are located at one of our towers outside of the town, with some of the radio resources located on site. Does anyone have any advice on some obstacles that you may have come across putting in a MIP? This is my first full console changeover. I've been servicing some Gold Elites, MCC5500s and ICP9000s, but haven't had a chance to do this from start to finish. Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Re: MIP 5000 new install
The interface to the radios on the MIP should be the same or similar to what you are doing now such as tone or local control. There is no DC control capability. The MIP does not have any record out capability so you will need to tap onto the tone pair if you are going to log the radios. My biggest disappointment has been when connecting to a control station on a trunked radio system. The talk permit tone heard at the speakers gets transmitted over the air to the field users and sounds odd. This is when you have a control station hooked up as a 4wire full duplex.
I have done about a half dozen of them and find them to be quite easy to setup and configure and like the easy to understand configuration database. Once you understand the system and its setup requirements you will find it to be quick and easy compared to older consoles.
The digital control radios are really nice because of the way they provide a "virtual control head" which adds many features that you would not normally see on a simple console.
If I was to do a new console now I would highly consider the Avtec Scout, I saw one of them in Vegas last year and it looked really nice.

Re: MIP 5000 new install
One of our technicians that is working with me (he's been around the block more than I) found these Line Level Mixers, Model ST-MX3 through Radio Design Labs and it sounds like they will be a great solution to the logging recording. Ever have any experience with these?
I totally agree with you on the Scout consoles from AvTec. I went to training at AvTec for the Scout and fell in love with them. They really got their stuff together and I hope we will be installing some of those in the near future. Thanks for the advice.
