Well I answered my own question. The knobs are very, very tight on the control shafts. Two very thin knife blades inserted between the knob base and the light pipe underneath the knob allows the knobs to be gently pried off.

The 7660 is a very common IC. It is negative charge pump. Input is positive and output is negative. If you search Mouser for a 7660 IC you should find it right away.

The voltage and current requirements a virtually the same BUT good old mother /\/\ reversed the polarity of the connector. Center is ground, shell is positive.

The Vertex 925 series P25 radios are FPP as well as the new Midland STP and STM P25 portables and Mobiles. Don't know about KWD but I would bet that they have something. Of course you have to "know" the right people to get the how-to information.
