sure enough. got my cable a few hours ago and got the jt1000 onto the programming computer. works beautifuly now :-)

turns out it was a secure without a bypass or secure module. took module from radio that wont read/write and it started working.

because scanners suck. even expensive ones. shitty audio from small speakers, bad rejection in a dense rf environment. in short the sensitivity and selectivity and received audio of a commercial radio will far exceed that of a scanner.
