I am the OP and I'm still watching this thread, but I haven't done anything in this area of research for years and what little there were of X2 sites are long gone anyway.

I would still be interested to know just to satisfy my curiosity, but it's hardly relevant now.

There is an option in CPS called 'CH required to boot' (or something like that), if that was ticked and the connection to the CH is lost for any reason, then that may explain why you can't get anything from the rear connector?

There's been a lot of work done with Automotive CAN Bus hacking and they run much faster (up to 1000kbps) so 9.6kbps should be a walk in the park. Looking at the rear J2 connector on mid-power XTL radios, I see a twisted pair CAN Bus on pins 2 & 3 (CAN+ & CAN- respectively) http://s27.postim...

There was a trick with ASTRO 25 CPS where you could do a legit install, then find & copy all those extra files into the working directory, which then became "portable", however I'm unsure whether that works with APX as well? It was a lot of work to track down the extra files though, th...

APX radios don't do DMR (aka MotoTRBO) although there have been rumors flying around for a long time that a cross-platform radio exists, to the best of my knowledge it's never been offered for sale.
