Allen is correct that the trunking Visar will not do conventional.
I have a Type II Visar that I used from time to time prior to rebanding and it does not do conventional.

Can be a few reasons:

Conventional personality set for Analog TX with Mixed-Mode RX.
You didn't set the TX frequency correct.
Possibly is it a split NAC and your TX NAC isn't correct?

Can you post some screen shots of your Personality and Zone Channel assignment?

Did you look at the PMAS4001A antenna that is UHF/700/800? It is a tad over 7" and not that bad vs the 8" APX 8K antenna.
I don't know what the performance on VHF would be, but if you are only listening it might be worth the $30.00 gamble.

What's the pricing on a 1000 look like for comparison? If it's not that different than the 900 then I'm very confused as to why the two radios exist separately. The pricing is very close, but the APX1000, with the exception of the 900 MHz model, is a single knob radio. I have been deploying the 100...

I messed around with the factory ones as well and found that the same unit operated flawlessly on an XTS5K but was terrible on a 2.5K. The 2.5 had distorted crackling RX audio that got worse when the earpiece was on the opposite side of the radio. The 5K didn't have any of these issues. I tried a nu...

We just did a bunch of internal testing with the XE500 and not very impressed with the performance.
The ruggedized Commander outperformed it in transmit audio quality, even in a high noise environment, without all the bells and whistles.

The internal speaker has its limitations, especially in an automobile environment, and audio quality is better using the external one. In an office environment the front facing speaker is adequate.

Depending on the application you might want to think about it.

And since Motorola ceased the ability to order flash upgrades for the 5000's and A model 2500's, there is no legal way for them to update the flashcode to even do P25 FDMA trunking and conventional P25, so off to surplus they go!
