you will loose all of your software options when the processor board is replaced unless you know how to handle that.

yes those boards fail and are expensive to replace

you may want to check the UCM version in the radio and how many modes it already has installed.

Those can only do three and needs a fairly late version UCM for AES.

The radio has to be on the latest firmware as well to support AES ....sounds like you are there.

yeah ...CPS15 is quite old.

What version is the firmware and the model number

Usually I would be using much later like CPS 28

I usually tend to lag on the software and firmware since M is notorious for bugs and issues in both.

I would try to keep the firmware below 28

I suspect that the add on board is a whole five freq front end ...the main board channel 1 and front end are enabled with the SIMUL button with 2 -6 being selected for the secondary.

In order to add just five channels you wouldn't need that much HW.

The SIMUL button probably just grounds chan 1 ...

The R2001D may be worth the cost ....doubt the 2200 is worth it from a commercial value perspective.

The shipping cost alone any more would exceed the value IMHO

You would be better to invest in a GPS based reference for the frequency and standard deviation null for FM.

do you have an older analog spectra or an Astro Spectra ?

None of those heads will work on an Astro Spectra ...you may be able to update the firmware in the 1063 head to work though

the 1033 head is the older 9000 series only

the 1047 and 1063 should work on an old spectra if it is an A9 version ...

The RTL4200A has the same connector

From the notch at 12oClock lets say pin 1 is the first pin on the right

1 = GND
2 = KEY
3 = KID
4 = WE

common issue ...ASK is a HW key ...USB

there was some posts about editing the SREC /bin file to remove years back. ASK location seemed somewhat dynamic as well ...location different depending on versions.

Usually easier to just over write with a new codeplug

I thought I had just sent one through the depot last summer but they may have been dropped since then.

Regardless I would try to clip an external current limited supply onto the battery contacts ...the negative can go to the chassis.

Set the voltage to 7.5 and the current fully limited /zero and ...

there are multiple items that often fail on the 2975 at the same time especially around the GEN and Receive.

I very rarely get a 2975 through calibration that does not have issues ...like 60 -70% have one or more items need repair. This is often the case with service monitors that are complex ...

replace the caps on the power supply filter board.

1. pull power supply ....two screws on side , two captive by the connectors , remove power supply connectors.
you may have to remove the CRT connector and fuse holders to get the clearance for it to pull out.

the rotary encoder skipping seems to be more of a software issue than hardware.
doubt that replacing would help because I have seen that in most units ...not sure if it's more prevalent in the 200 Mhz processors or not.
The up arrows do seem to be more consistent vs. the rotary control

sounds like one of the components in the RF I/O has some leakage.

The R2001C had an odd RF I/O design.

Part of which was a diode switch path in parallel with the RF relay.

It's like they didn't believe the relay to engage the 50 ohm termination would be fast enough so they added an diode RF ...

the COM-120 loops back using the RF path in the power termination assembly for the various tests.

The problem may be the RF section specifically the synthesizer sections not locking at the specific frequency used during the self test.

these are the fused front panel BNC connectors. A portion of the BNC unscrews and a 1/16 amp pico fuse is inside.
newer designs avoid using these fuses and have a more sophisticated approach to over power situations on RF ports.

finding new may be tough. closest is a JFW BNC inline fuse. Pasternack used to have one @ 75.00 each.

best bet is to either
1. repair the damaged connector
2. salvage one from a scrap Motorola service monitor ...used on the R20XX, R22XX , R24XX and R26XX series.
3. Bypass and just use a jumper ...

APX mobile has channel voice announcements , multi band , GPS and support of newer heads

In emergency vehicles voice announcements has a lot of value in operating the radio without looking at the head to see if you are on the correct channel.

If that has no value than there really isn't much ...

given that's it's still sold and supported they should offer calibration for it at a price inline with the cost of the unit.

I'm sure that unit has a fit in the market place ...like an IFR 500A equivalent/upgrade ....but would not be my first choice as a primary service monitor.

so I stand corrected the 3010 version has a "tuned" power meter ...see page 37 on the users manual. Who knew 8)

You can enter the TX frequency or have it detect it by looping the -30 port on the back to the RF in. See the manual for details.

Those measured power values are too far out to be in ...

The COM3010 like most vintage service monitors uses a broadband power measurement approach and not tuned or compensated to the specific operating frequency.

Also there are tolerances on the power meter measurements as well and in this case it's .5db so depending on the actual power in 1Watt off may ...

surprised the R1 and R2 exciter and PA didn't interoperate .

Usually an R2 exciter would program down into the 140's and a R2 PA cover down into that range as well.

May have been that the PA was defective and not really a R1 R2 issue

cheapest cable is a direct RS-232 to the rear 15 pin connector.

by default the controller is jumpered for RS-232 but the jumpers can also be moved to support a VRS

The programming cable for the W series microphone connector are typically rare and expensive.

the reason I mention that is if the radio doesn't have a tag it may be an analog version.

normally you would get a codeplug too new error if this was a version issue.

Pull the top cover and see which controller is installed.

It may also be an Astro Spectra Plus which also uses a different CPS ...

the D version smartrib is only required for the 800 P25 trunking version firmware.

The standard non P25 trunking firmware will flash fine ...which is used everywhere else..like VHF and UHF which never supported P25 trunking.

I have never component leveled the FLASH failures ....just swapped the controller.

The price of 800 XTS's is low enough such that the parts and labor to repair not worth it.

I have seen some R26XX's with the SP designation.

The last one was in actually an R2600B with standard firmware . Was tagged as an R2660 and had the internal DC power connections for option slices .

I would just replace the whole unit.

There are used ones available at a reasonable price.

trying to repair that unit is not something I would do unless there wasn't a supply of used ones.

New they would be a small fortune but that model is NLA as new

thought the issue was getting the O3 head to work with a remote mount XTL currently configured and working with an O5 head.

I plug the O3's into the TIB and just use the rear accessory cable for speaker and ignition

This is my bench test setup and avoids all of the addition cables and heads for an 'O" series setup.

W series remote is still a pain but those are just about gone

for a real install the O3 extension cable ...

surprised it had a bad keyboard ...fairly passive device but you may have lost the 5 volt through the cable. May have shorted and blown the trace.

Like Rick I would have just swapped it though. Parts for the 8924X are plentiful right now so even though these a very repairable parts often not worth ...

there should only be some chokes on the filter assembly ...iyou may have lost the +5 volt to the keyboard from the processor.

Sounds like the optical sensor /spinner is working but the select button is not

chances are if the keyboard is almost dead than it mostly likely a bad interface chip on ...

IIRC correctly the front panel goes directly to the processor board.

On the 8924C it may get routed through a filter assembly. 25 pin D connector with some chokes for RFI ...once again going by memory.

Nothing active on the front panel ...may be your processor board and the interface IC's

unit needs to be re-cal'd... there are multiple filters that need to be aligned ...real PITA part of the R26XX calibration
