XTL2500 and 4ohm speaker?
I've read confusing info about the XTL2500 and what speakers can be safely used long term with it. I've read the 4ohm (or 3.2ohm) speakers are OK to use ALA the audio isn't cranked up for long periods. I've heard that Motorola implicitly states to use 8ohm speakers only with the XTL2500 though I hav...

I missed a few stragglers from the braid and they were shorting to the center conductor of the SO239. Hey, the eyes aren't what they used to be from reading too many damn resistors bands. :o Resoldered the antenna coax onto the board and SO239, powered her back up and all is well! :D Thanks for hang...

I'm also leaning towards a short on the PA board from reverse-wiring the DC primary. I would try locating another PA (parts radios are cheap on Ebay) and swapping it out. Well, I asked my brother if he had the mains reversed and he emphatically stated he did not. Still, when I get home I'll dive ba...

Re: Improving Speaker Audio on Spectra?
Get one of the SVA amplified speakers, remove the amp guts, and run it as a regular speaker. You'll notice a marked improvement in audio quality thanks to the metal casing and extra room inside. I've got some sheet metal laying around...I'll make a box for the speaker and see how it sounds. Thanks ...

Re: Spectra: RF Connector Swap
The 01/90 is a serial bus failure. Should have nothing to do with the PA section. I know, but if something's shorted then that might be the general hardware fail that is also attributed to that 01/90. The reason you see a short on the antenna is that in the PA filter section there is a coil from th...

Did you read my post to you about DC continuity on an RF tank circuit? If you did, did you understand it? I don't think you have a "short" on your antenna connection to ground. I appreciate your help, Tom. It's my understanding that there are some transceivers that will ground the antenna...

Re: Spectra: RF Connector Swap
How did you do that? There is no physical space to mount it. It must be on a short stinger hanging out the back of the radio. Nope, no stinger. You're thinking of the panel mount SO239 with the square flange and 4 holes. I used a bulkhead connector. I did have to enlarge the hole in the Spectra. He...

Re: Spectra: Fuse Locations?
From when I removed the mini-uhf and its coax I might have a tiny piece of braid shorting the coax center pin and ground solder pads. I did check it with a magnifying lens to ensure it was clean. I'll check it out again. The radio was working fine until I had to putz with it. Thanks Bob.

While installing my vhf Spectra today I believe my brother somehow shorted the radio before I installed a fuse on the mains. Had a bad mini-uhf connector on my Spectra. I dissembled the PA board and cut the wire at the back of the mini uhf connector. I've had an A/S3 for years now, a legit non-hackged one, that I hadn't used the low battery alert on it... until now.
