I see what you are saying. to me iPhone is just another handheld computer with embedded wifi adn EDGE radios - just executed and built better. No different than the previous windows mobile/ CE versions. Apple is actually using this SiteCAST/iWalkie system on site with MotoTRBO and iDEN and Macs, etc...

Critical RF makes a "SiteCAST" box that will let you do this for around $300. It will also let you then talk to Nextel or th LMR system from unlimited numbers of PC's or SmartPhones included.

Folks, Critical RF, Inc. makes a unit for about $600 that will link the (2) together. They also publish the schematics to build your cables yourself if you are on a budget. You will need a computer of 120Mhz or greater and 2Mb of disk space to set it. up I saw the demo at IWCE last year worked well....

http://www.criticalrf.com also has a way to do this with their SiteCAST box where you would just hook up the NEXTEL iDEN to a PC and the UHF to the PC. You can build your own cables/pinouts published to save $.

You can always go from v.24 or v.35 to IP using PackeTUBE. Then they can be linked anywhere on the planet using Broadband or private LAN/WAN.

GSM is clean when levels are perfect..Not absolute fidelity but pretty close. Much better than say IMBE ;) Try bringing you output levels up coming into/driving the soundcard line in/mic.
