I spoke with a guy the other day who told me that on the Astro Spectra Plus, there is a rubber plug on the back that has to be removed to access a programing port that utilizes the serial port and a rib box.

I use Goo Gone on a regular basis, only once have I ever had it discolor anything. Another thing that seems to work is regular car wax. Really! you can wax the sticky stuff off in clumps!

I used the tip of a very sharp test probe to slightly bend back the tabs of the pins, then used a thin plastic straw to help guide it out of the hole. I've done three of these this way and attached a DB9 with about a foot long cable on it.

I've used an 80 db piezo beeper and had real good luck, it just sounds like a really loud pager going off and you don't need to use a relay! Stay away from ones that sound like backup alarms.
