I, too have seen some equipment totally F.U.B.A.R. from inept installers. Some people just don't seen to realize that you can't pinch wire insulation that way! Then there was the guy in my volunteer F.D. that grounded all of the accesories in the truck by using a screw against the plastic dash! Work...

I would be more concerned about the fact that you would be using a sometimes-poor connection (everywhere the antenna "telescopes") for a transmitting antenna. For a receive antenna, this usually works fine, but it isn't carrying any current when receiving, either! 8)

Just my $0.02 worth: for any high-power mobile radio (or any load around 30 amps or so), I personally would not run anything under #8 copper (app. 40 amps up to app. 50') from under the hood to the trunk/rear of a vehicle. For 20 amps, #10. For 10 amps, #12. I realize that this is often times overki...

That's part of what I love about this place: some questions are answered before you ask them! I too will be attempting, for the first time, to program a Syntor X9K in the near future. I am using a clone RIB, but since I built it myself, modeled directly on the OEM, I think that it should work ok. No...

synthesized UHF Mitrek

Has anyone ever seen/worked with a synthesized UHF Mitrek? Will they work on the UHF HAM band? If so, what mods are needed? Thanks! 8)

lightning protection

First off, there is some great info already posted to your question. Second, the ground system, preferably an extensive one, actually helps more to prevent strikes than to protect equipment when a strike occurs, although it does go a long way toward doing just that when a strike does occur. Last, I ...

Multiple drawers on a Maratrac A7

Can a Maratrac A7 head be used to operate two different drawers, such as can be done with the Spectra and Syntor X9000? And how is it done?

Syntor X9000 RSS

I have been told that some newer versions of RSS for some radios write the serial number of the RSS to the codeplug when programming. Which, if any, do this? And, specifically, does the X9000 RSS do this? Thanks for the help! 8)

For the P1225, check with your local Motorola dealer for a used (dead?) rapid charger base. It should have all four contacts in it and you only need to remove a few parts between the data and ground connection on the board. The layout you need for which pin is which is found on Batlabs home page und...

Mitrec head on Maratrac

Cables probably don't wire the same, but if you're willing to take the time, you could probably mod the head to work if you have acces to manuals for both.

O.K., I found something yesterday that may be the RSS for the Syntor X, but how do I interface to the radio? Cable pin-outs? Does it use the regular RIB?

Try the Vertex VX-5R. One less band than the VX-7, but will receive almost anywhere, and has exellent battery life.

New to the board, but it looks great already! Volunteer firefighter and HAM radio operator, and lovin' every minute of it!!! By the way, its not the number or size of your antenna that counts, its the frequency and the way you use it!

Manual squelch heads were an option for the high-band Maratrac, but the audio board may be different, not sure. I plan to research this further, and I will try to let you know more when I do. I think that, if nothing else, you should be able to unplug the squelch pot in the head and I think it shoul...
