Except for the "AUSSP" (Australian) Saber RSS, which is based on a really, really ancient version of the standard Saber RSS. In this case it really does need to be 386 or below.

I haven't noticed much of a performance difference either.

One thing to be keep in mind with the stubby is the reduced bandwidth compared with the whip. The whip is good across the whole UHF band but the stubby is useful for quite a bit less depending on what model you get, eg 440-470.

Do they charge OK in a single unit IMPRES charger?

I think I'll have to grab one or two. My ASTRO Saber 3 remains my favourite radio, but carrying it with the monster of a HNN9033 IMPRES battery, which is the same size as the radio but twice the weight gets old fast.

XTS 2500s in particular can be had cheap at the moment. The guys in Hong Kong have driven down the prices of even legitimate radios with their 123ABC1234 examples on that auction site.

Interface Metric is what you're after.

Network Connections
right click on your WLAN interface
Click Properties
Networking tab
Right click Internet Version Protocol 4, select Properties
click Advanced
At the bottom, uncheck Automatic Metric, set the Interface Metric to 1

Do the same for your WWAN ...

ADSL modems, commonly known simply as DSL and used for residential internet services won't. SHDSL modems will, up to 4 miles or so if line quality is decent.

Had a look at a few pictures and I can't see a selector switch on the back, if they are capable are they auto selecting, or is there a switch inside the consolette on the power supply itself?

This trick works like a champ for NiMH and NiCD, but it's worth mentioning that one should never, ever do this to a lithium ion battery. It will probably explode spectacularly.

In the P25 context, at least for most users, the cryptography doesn't realistically need to be particularly strong.

For the effort involved in converting a Saber, vs the cost, why would you bother? Keeping in mind of course that it loses its type approval when you do such a mod, so you can't use it on the LMR bands anymore anyway.

It's not a trivial exercise.

If the radio has Radio Trace/Remote Monitor enabled, you can get cooperation from the system operator to get the radio to key-up for a while and provide details of what site and traffic channel radio is on while it's transmitting, you have radio direction finding ...

Depends on how wide a snapshot of spectrum you want to take.

Are you going to record 17 channels individually, or sample a huge slice of spectrum containing all those channels? If so, how far apart are the lowest and highest frequencies?

Yeah, the designers of the T3011 KVLs didn't worry about tamper resistance at all. They probably followed the principle that if someone has physical access to the hardware, the game's up anyway.

Not quite. P25 is a large suite of standards, and not all of them govern what happens over the air interface.

Even referring only to the air interface, P25 provides a lot of air interface services that aren't related to the vocoder at all, e.g. over the air rekeying, call alerts, data transport etc.

If you use the Icom FIPS-compliant DES-OFB or AES, it should be compatible with any other FIPS-compliant unit, which would include Motorola. The only encryption algorithm that causes "inter-brand" problems is DES-XL, which is proprietary to Motorola, and is not often available in other brands ...
