3K a pop? Maybe for the III models, but the basic I model is considerably less and is quite adequate for departments that don't need to assign more than 48 channels or talkgroups for use by firefighters. And...let's get creative here...is there a law that says the radios have to be NEW? Because I th...

SP50s are totally out of date, and may not even be supported by Motorola anymore. And they're dying like flies now. You forget the marvel that is 256 bit (and beyond) encryption. Re: Speculate for fun: Design the XTS-10000

I think some form of wireless programming (bluetooth is a good idea) would be a fine idea. If we could get away from the radio-specific cabling and support equipment and go to something more generic and widely supported in the industry, it wouldn't be a bad thing. But there will always be a need for...

A lack of FAIL messages on the display or error tones.

Those messages will show up when the radio gets far enough out of the regular frequency band that the VCO won't lock.

Not that there's really any point to that. It does allow you to receive some VHF air band traffic but as the receiv...

Nick found a way to buy all the assemblies necessary to build complete radios, from Motorola, and was building them and selling them for a profit. The Astro line (at least, the Astro Saber) uses the Motorola 56001 DSP chip. Because of the use of that chip, and (apparently) the rest of the radio's topology as well, it's THEORETICALLY capable of operating in AM mode. There are various bits and pieces of code for the 56001 chip out there that you...
