Re: Maratrac Siren

Yes, it is usable as a stand-alone unit. For the backlight on the control unit to work, it is usually hooked to the VIP port of a radio's control head. You will simply have to connect the proper connections to +12VDC and ground. Unfortunately, I don't know which connections to use.

If you can get enough movement to get to the underside of the contact, try putting a small amount of epoxy under it, then press it back in place. Just be careful not to get any epoxy on top of the contact. Try using a rubber band wrapped around the battery, holding down something (like a pencil eras...

Take off the battery cover and remove the battery. Look at the bottom of the battery compartment. There is a protrusion that sticks out of the bottom, toward the rear. You should be able to see a split in this protrusion. Slide a thin-bladed screwdriver into the split, and gently pry downward. The i...

Re: Isolating 2m/70cm across the base insulator of an HF antenna

I don't know if I would want to try that. By isolating the V/U antenna, you've just made it into a lightning magnet. With it isolated, it will no longer be DC grounded, and any near-by lightning strike will very possibly induce a large enough voltage into it to cause serious damage to your equipment...

One thing to remember if you try Jackhackett's design is that all resistors have to be, as Jack said, non-inductive . This means that they can not be wire-wound. 20 watt, non-inductive resistors may be a bit hard to find, and may be a little expensive, but Jack's circuit is a proven concept. There a...

Try putting a regular siren speaker inside a small box, then pack the small box inside a larger box with styrofoam peanuts, or perhaps foam rubber. You might have to "layer" several boxes this way, but you should be able to get the volume down to a "comfortable" level in this way.
