APX Rear Connector Contacts (J2)

Post by TX_Shooter »

Anyone know:
  • A) The Motorola part number is for the contacts to the J2 connector?
    B) What the real-world part number is for the same contact?
    C) What the part number or make/model is for the crimper of the same contact?
I worked in avionics for years and got quite used to the phrase, "There's a specific tool for crimping that contact." Anyone know what it is for this contact?

Thanks,
TXShooter

Per the APX BSM

"J2 is located on the back of the transceiver. Table 9-2 describes the function of each pin. The Male
crimping pin can be ordered, according to the wire gauge for the accessory. Please select part
number 3980034F03 for 22-28 gauge wire and 3980034F01 for 18 to 20 gauge wire."

Are those pins the same as the Amphenol pins for the DB connectors?

No, they are not. The shoulder is narrower on the Motorola pins than on a standard D-sub male pin. You can use them but they won't stay seated.

It seems to be a big secret, as no-one ever answers the question about a suitable make/model for the crimp tool for the xtl/apx pins. I "think" the correct Amp tool is 91548-1, which lists for over $800.
What are people using successfully? And I mean with proper clean crimps, not the screwed up ones that we are getting using the regular dies that work OK for Mototrbo and 16pin connectors?

Amp tool 91548-1 will not do proper crimp. Just take a look on this picture:
