I try a 99% alcahol on a rag first. Something like 409 cleaner maybe.

There is a product called 'Goof OFF' .....BUT.. it will take some of the oil out of the plastic leaving a white haze.

There was a lenthy posting on this a while back with way more information you mite want to take a look at.

Best thing to try is charcoal lighter fluid. Yes it works.
does minimal or no damage. Major solvent in it is naptha (sic).
The slight oil in it keeps the plastec from crazing ir going white.
put a bit on a papet towel and rub briskly on the marker stain.
Lighter fuel is the same thing almost but a bit purer, and harsher.

WD40 works for removing many types of marker. It won't damage it either.

It also works great for removing bugs and tar from automotive finish!

Why remove it? Add a comma and call it good. :P

Another suggestion is Oops. It will clean ANYTHING! If it hazes the case, use some Mother's Black Magic (I think. Don't have the bottle in front of me) and it will make the radio look like new again. The Oops is available at Wal-Mart and the Mother's is at Auto Zone.

Rubbing alcohol to clean

STP tire treatment (very little on rag) to shine back up

Ha, I know people that use to label their stuff that way...

Two things that came to mind are:

"This is not yours"

or

"Stolen from XYZ police department"

ECG makes an ink and marker remover. I use it to remove most any writing off of prison radios. Part # is RX4000-6 for the six ounce can. Available at most electronic wholesale places-RRRobby

Remover

I do not think this will work on paint pen, but works on marker, ball point pen, etc.

Women's aerosol hair spray! Do not know what is in it that works so well, but it takes it off quick, dries before it has a chance to attack the plastic or paint.

I used this on T1600s and Centracom consoles where brainless dispatchers had nothing better to do than write on the equipment. Believe it or not, it was in the contract to remove the markings! Also works on adhesive tape residue
and gives the part a nice, silky appearance. :P

What radios do you own?: Progreso soup can with CRT

Messing up radio cases, etc.

Best one I ever saw was in Ohio when I was in college many years ago. The local power company's kerosene lanterns had STAMPED into their tank bases, "STOLEN FROM THE DAYTON POWER AND LIGHT CO." But people still stole them anyway.

And there is still a special place in hell for anyone who does freehand engraving on a plastic radio case.
