In addition to the many posts on this topic over the years, stickied at the top of this very forum is the post "Batdude's Encryption Article & SECURENET Parts List" which has links to very detailed information on keyloading newer Motorola radios with the older 3011 series of KVL's.

I have gone through that article and searched around, i was after some more specific info on using the T3011DX as i dont have a manual for it. Mabie just some simple instructions on how to load a single key using the DX would help.

Thanks

In the CPS, make sure CKR is checked in secure profile. In the next tab, make sure the first key is CKR 1, and give it a name. Write the radio, and radio is set.

I don't have a DX loader anymore, but from memory when I had one... In the DX loader you need to get to key 0 (zero) by pressing 0 and some other key to bring up key 0. You may have to erase key 0 first. Once empty make sure your at key 0 and type in your key into the DX loader. If asked for a CKR, press 1. Once back at the main screen (if you can even call it that..), press 0 then press the DX keyloader PTT with your XTS5000 hooked up.

One thing that gets most people is that the first key in the DX keyloader is in slot 0, so everything is offset by one.

Just attaching the KVL cable to the XTS5000 should put the radio into keyload mode - even without a KVL attached at the other end. Somthing is apparently wrong with the flex in the radio or your missing/broken pins on the KVL cable.

On my custom cable just used to load keys (not program radio), pins 8 10 12 are all tied together. I think these 3 pins connected is what sets the radio (at least the 5K) into keyload mode.

just tested the main flex connector on my 5k, there is continuity from the side connecter pins to the flex connector plug so its got me stumped.

I thought that a 3011Dx would not load OFB keys. How do you distinguish between what is OFB and XL.

I think the key type is selected in "Conventional Personality" "Secure" "DES-XL Tx Default"

OFB and XL use the same DES key. Assuming your talking about a Multi-key equiped radio with a XL/OFB UCM, there is no distinguishing between keys as they are all the same type, DES.

OFB vs. XL transmit is set on a personality by personality basis for digital(Analog is -XL only). A digital personality will default to OFB unless the aforementioned "XL tx Default" box is checked on the secure tab.

Escomm can make you a very reasonable deal on a keyload cable, that is where I got mine.

I would buy one if i knew for sure that it was the cable, but the cable that we built works on the xts3k.

I will keep it in mind.

If it works on the XTS3k, then it would work on the XTS5k. Sounds like your radio has a problem, not the cable.

I assume that if you followed the post above then you do in fact have the "Secure Hardware Enabled" check-box selected under "Secure Configuration" in your XTS5K. If you didn't, the check-box for "CKR" would've been greyed out. Haven't tried it, but I'm thinking that might prevent the radio from displaying "KEYLOADING" when the cable is connected. I've never used a T3011DX key loader, but could this be a case where you have to select the check-box for "PID Key management", similar to keying a multi-key enabled XTS5K with a KVL-3000 plus in ASN mode? Sounds to me like "key 0" is referencing a physical slot as opposed to the CKR number, again like an ASN mode KVL3K. Hope this helps, man.

I am thinking there are only 3 possibilites here:

-Bad flex/connector on the radio
-Secure not enabled
-Bad or non-present secure board

I go with #1 or #2

Thanks for your help guys, under Secure Configuration i have Hardware enabled, under the multikey options there is both CKR and PID Key Managment, under the Secure Multikey 1 it shows CKR 00001 Keyname (mykey1) indexed is unchecked slot A 0 slot b 0

Question #2

What are you trying to load? DVP, DES, AES, DVI, etc...

I just dunno... I have an XTS5000 (firmware 9.xxish) that I have loaded OFB (I have XL and OFB installed in my UCM) into a number of times. Ditto for all of the portables and Astro Spectra mobiles at the SO - using a T3011DX. In fact; I only recently sold my T3011DX that I kept as a spare to my KVL3000 Plus, because I had more KVL's than I had attorney fees for my divorce. In fact; at one time; I had every KVL that Motrola ever made except the (Fascinator Key filler). I had to do a little tweaking in the software in the XTS5000 to get it to accept the load, but it was no big deal; and it sounds like you've made all of the changes to make it work. The lack of the "KEYLOADING") on the screen leads me to agree with the previous post about the bad flex or KVL cable. If my memory serves me correctly; no matter what incorrect parameters I had in my radio; as soon as I attached the Motorola KVL cable; "Keyloading" apeared on the screen of he radio.

Ok guys here is the latest, tried putting in a new module thinking it was the module that was at fault, and no go still the same couldnt get the radio into KEYLOADING mode,, but i thought i would try getting a 1K resistor and putting it between pin 8 & 10 on the side connector, and bam got the KEYLOADING screen so seems i have to look in to the home brew cable and see what is going on there. Thanks for all your supportive comments throughout this experience.

Cheers
