For several weeks we have heard reports of Minitor V's that were damaged and rendered unusable when used with the amplified charger.

Last week we received confirmation that Motorola was not shipping the amplified charger for the Minitor V.

Today, posted on MOL is SRN #1512 - "Minitor V Charger Amplifier Related Battery or Pager Failures"

SUBJECT: Minitor V Charger Amplifier Related Battery or Pager Failures
SYSTEMS AFFECTED: Minitor V pagers and batteries when using a Charger Amplifier
MODELS & OPTIONS AFFECTED: All Minitor V pagers and batteries when using a Charger Amplifier
SYMPTOM: Battery will not charge or battery / pager appear to be dead after charging in a charger amplifier
CAUSE: Is under investigation by Motorola Paging Engineering Team
Workaround: The paging products group recommends the immediate discontinued use of the charger amplifier.
1) If any of your customers are using a charger amplifier and are experiencing the symptoms listed above and do not
already have a standard charger for the pagers, please contact Motorola TSO at 800-927-2744 prompts 3–4-1 and
request a standard charger and battery, if needed.
2) If the customer already has a standard chargers and the battery is defective, please contact Motorola Parts
Department at 800-422-4210 to obtain a warranty battery replacement.
3) If the pager is defective, please return to your regional Motorola Service Center for repair.
**Note – if it can not be determined if the battery or pager are defective, please contact your local dealer or return both
to the Radio Support Center.

Today Motorola posted SRN1512A, Up Issue to SRN1512.

They added the following Note ...

**Note 2 – At this time, please do not return any of the charger ampliers to the Radio Support Center or Parts Dept. Once the final resolution is ready to be implimented, this bulletin will be up issued with instructions on
how to get the charger amplifier repaired.

So will they send a standard charger for free? I've got a few M5s enroute with amplified chargers... fscking Motorola.

Other than that, the M5s seem to work great. Maybe Kenwood will build a Minitor competitor one day...

Today Motorola posted SRN1512A, Up Issue to SRN1512.

Let's see, Motorola says don't return the defective chargers for the time being......

Apparently M has the option to buy these businesses back if things don't work out. Of course, by then they would have to hire all new employees - new, younger, cheaper employees.

Nothing new concerning this issue has been posted on MOL as of 2/16/06.

The new Relm/BK branded radios (RP 3000/3600) have the equivalent of a Minitor pager built right into the radio.

No good (despite the fact that Relms are pieces of :o).

Repeat after me: A radio is NOT a pager. A radio is NOT a pager.

Radios have short battery life, can be bumped of channel, break easier, etc. A pager should be virtually idiot-proof, whereas a radio might not be.

I want Kenwood to build a Minitor clone... most of their radios already have two-tone decode capabilities.

THIS IS NOT AN OFFICIAL ANSWER, just a best guess. Since the amplified charger has an UL approval, any changes to that amp would have to go back to UL for re-approval. Don't expect the replacements available real soon. UL takes their sweet time on testing anything and everything.

SYSTEMS AFFECTED:

MODELS & OPTIONS AFFECTED:
All Minitor V pagers and batteries when using a Charger Amplifier

SYMPTOM:
Battery will not charge or battery / pager appears to be dead after charging in a charger amplifier

CAUSE:
It has been determined that Minitor V batteries, RLN5707A, with a date code prior to 632, when used in conjunction
with the RLN5704A, RLN5705A, RLN5706A or RLN5869A, Charger Amplifier, may have an internal fuse in the battery
that may open or short causing the pager to appear to be dead after charging. The date code is located above the
label on the right hand side.

Resolution:
Changes in the battery manufacturing process have been implemented to address the fuse shorting or opening.

In a previous version of this SRN, it was recommended that the immediate discontinuation of the use of the charger
amplifier because it was determined that the use of the battery and charger amplifier combination was causing the
issue. With the root cause listed above, the use of existing charger amplifiers, still in the field, is now acceptable.

Should a battery that, when charged in the charger amplifier, exhibits the symptom outlined above, a replacement
battery will correct the problem. Please contact Motorola parts department at 1-800-422-4210 to obtain replacement
batteries. Please reference “SRN1512B” when placing the order, to insure processing as a warranty replacement
order.

That's great

They have totaly avoided the audio buzz after the pager and battery are completly charged and the feedback on the UHF pagers when the amp volume is more than 1/4.

Both these issues where discussed with a Motorola rep at the fire convention in indy a few months ago, now it's ok to use the only slightly defective amps.

Sure glad they got the guys card, guess he will be geting a call next week.
