ThinkPad Features Program/Utility

Post by Will »

Got a IBM ThinkPad 760x and the RSS runs fine, EXCEPT the small screen in DOS.

According to the Instruction man., there is a configuration utility disk to enable DOS to use the full screen capabilities. It is listed as: ThinkPad Features Program, and reffers to utility . I do not have any disks with this laptop.

Also the COM ports are backwrds, something is taking up COMM 1.

Thanks for any help,

is it true dos, or like windows 95 dos? if its any sort of version of windows control+enter will make it full screen. If its pure dos i will have to check on it. As for the com ports poke around in bios and im shure you will see like an internal modem or something that has the com port. disable it and com1 shall be free.

At this time there is Win98 on the computer. I am booting with GUI disabled, Windows does NOT load..Just Command.com and IO.sys loads.

I guess what you are saying is that you don't HAVE that utility?

Have you been to IBM, (now Lenovo) support? I see the 760X is not exactly directly listed, but you'll find that if you paw around the site for similar models, like maybe the 770 series, 380, 600, that you'll find stuff that applies.

For example, I found this:

This fella seems to have archived all the old Thinkpad stuff, read the index and some of the other .txt files:

Also, this here forum right here has a lot of info:

Unfortunately, there is a LOT of hard to find stuff for Thinkpads so far as configuration stuff, and not that IBM has dumped some of it, it's a little harder to dig out.

Also investigate the video/display drivers, which may or may not affect DOS. Believe it or not, some Thinkpads actually had drivers that were for the video "card" (display adaptor) and a SEPARATE driver for the display panel itself.

And furthermore, after due consideration, I found the "driver matrix" page for that machine:

I know with my DELL, I can toggle small & full screen in DOS by pressing function (FN) and F7 (font). Could it be that simple for the thinkpad?

I bought a Thinkpad 360CSE 2 years ago off of Ebay, and it's been a workhorse, it gets tossed in the van, it's been dropped more than 10 times and still ticking, only the LCD video ribbon flex is giving me fits now, but the lines can be dealt with.

I got drivers off that site that was listed above (thank you!) and will attempt to get more life from this as I got a bare bones portable, but it's a tough working S.O.B I'll have to say.

I call it 'BORG' as the front cover is off, as are many others, due to tiny repairs, so it looks like a garbage box so I never worry about it being 'lifted' if I leave it in the van.

I should try Maxtrac RSS on a Timex.....Tape recorder data anyone?

Com1 is always taken up by nothing. This is normal, ignore it.
