Actually, it says "Invalid model, customer, or serial number." when I try to read/write.

Re: Problems programming HT1000
You can only use rss software RVN4098 HT/JT/Visar for a true HT1000.
If your radio is dyked and has anything other than a HT1000 control board in it, it would likely be an MT2000, MTS2000 or other JEDI board. You'd need to use MTSX rss for those particular boards.

Re: Problems programming HT1000
That's the P/N for the front shield/flex control assembly. You would need to remove that shield assy., then remove the two boards connected end to end under it. The board on the bottom end of the frame is the control board, and upper is RF board. They should have stickers with p/n's on the side facing the frame.
But first, if you have the MTSX RSS you could try reading the radio with that. If it connects, problem solved. It would also tell you on the opening screen which of the supported MTSX control boards is in the radio.
NOTE: I am assuming that you just got these radios and I'm just guessing here at what your issue may be since there are a lot of parts radios being sold today with HT1000 cases and MT/MTS/MTX innards mixed inside that would create the problem you're having.
If you have actually had these radios for a long time and have programmed them successfully before with whatever software you're trying to use now, then you can disregard my suggestion.
