Need help with 2 IMBE freq's

Post by N4KVE »

Help. I have a few AS3 radios & a XTS5000 all UHF mostly on ham freq's. They all work fine & I have a few IMBE T/A freq's I use. NAC is 293 & they all talk to each other. The AS radios all have the latest host/dsp, & the 5000 is 14/14. Today I decided to program a XTS3000 that was last programmed by Mr. Deluca, 7 years ago with 9.05 RSS. I used 5.02 CPS & all went well. Radio talks on Ham repeaters & works great, except for the IMBE simplex freq's. The 3000 will receive from the AS's & the 5000. When I tx, only the AS's hear the 3000. The 5000 doesn't hear the 3000. If I hit monitor on the 5000, & key up the 3000, the noise goes away on the 5000, but no voice is heard. FC on the 3000 is 4F1E009, & host/dsp is 7.12.00/8.02.08. I have never used the 3000 in digital since I bought it from Mr. Deluca. So what do I have to do so the 5000 can hear the 3000? GARY N4KVE

Considering Nick wasn't much on aligning radios, I would suggest a complete bench alignment by a competent technician before you go any further.

I whole heartedly agree. It is general rule of thumb that any radios that originated from that source *MUST* be fully aligned. If he was the source, and it's never seen a service monitor since him, it is guaranteed it is out of alignment and needs full service.

Thanks for the replies. Guess it's time for an alignment. I must admit the radio has worked great over the years. TX power is spot on, & the RX is the best of any radio I own. I'll have it looked at. GARY N4KVE

The criticalities for P25 operation are transmitter frequency error and deviation/deviation balance. Expect excellent results from a proper alignment.

Is there an Impres Nicad on the XTS5000? May or may not be related, but I experienced a similar issue several years ago.

No Impress battery. However why does the 3000 xmit to the AS3 in IMBE just fine, but not the 5000? Does the 5000 have a tighter receiver that doesn't like the 3000, but the AS3 has a looser receiver & doesn't care? Could the 5000 also need an alignment? GARY N4KVE

Gary,

If you're dealing with eBay-type equipment with an unknown history or questionable origin (parts built, etc.) it's always a good idea to put them on a monitor and go through the alignment.

I know of several parts-built ASTRO Sabers that years after they were built, were finally put on GD AutoTest and the end result was night and day.

There's also some strangeness with XTS 5000's relating to the proximity of the transmitting radio. Give someone the 5000 and take the other radio and walk 30 feet apart and re-test. You might find it works at a distance, but not close in. I've experienced this first hand.

I work on this equipment (well, infrastructure mostly) for a living, and I can't stress enough just how much of a difference a proper alignment on a calibrated service monitor makes. What can seem to work fine in the real-world environment is actually all wrong when put through the paces under the supervision of test equipment.
