makes me wonder if its a M2 in a M3 case - that would do it.

Whats the model number of the radio?

DTMF generate came to life after 4 or 5 somthing HOST and DSP, i dont recall.

If its ancient f/w, thats probably the cause.

hightower makes a good point too, make sure there's a M3 flex behind the cover

The radio has the flex for a Keypad and it is a full model III. I can enter channel numbers for Direct Access as well as program phone numbers MDC, etc, just not DTMF, Host and DSP firmware are version 4.00.01. Radio SN is 320C****** Radio is H18KEH9PW7AN, Flashport is 1400010000003. I have 46 of the same batch of radios, all were purchase at government auction. I have programmed 3 of them all with the same result.

yeah, 4.0 isn't going to give you dtmf generate, it didnt come until later.

I had a 4.8 radio, they shipped mid 04, they didnt have it either, had to upgrade to get dtmf.

There have been a host of other things improved, I am sure the $ you saved getting them at auction can easily justify the $80 f/w bump for each radio.
