XTS2500 Newbie Questions

Post by MotoFAN »

Hi all!

I am not a newbie in Moto, but newbie in XTS series.

I have obtained one XTS2500 (H46QDH9PW7BN) and have a few dummy questions:

1. Keyboard and display backlight is very very very poor - it hardly appreciable even in darkness.

What is the trouble? How it can be increased?

2. LED on top doesn't works. It doesn't flashes when carrier is detected, doesn't lights when PTT is pressed & etc.

I have passed through CPS R10.00.00, tried to change many different options, read CPS help file & etc., but still have no ideas why it doesn't works.

Please help!

It sounds like it may have been one of those ex-Navy Seals units with the dim backlight, which is actually a "feature" for night vision.

Thanks to all!

Already found few similar topics tonight.

Yes, your are correct, Marine Corps radio.

Now my greatest dream - hack for backlight to increase its intensity!!

How much I have understood, it still is not present.

But I hope! After all owners of this version XTS2500 becomes more and more!

I can't believe that nobody knows about encryption!

The only encryption option for the Astro25 radios that doesn't involve keyloading the radio would be ADP software encryption. If you really do have one of those ex-Marine Corps radios, then your radio is very likely not flashed for ADP, so the answer would be no.

You mean that Marine Corps XTS2500 have no "ADP software encryption" option installed?

it IS a requirement for Most others (non-adp, Ex: DVL, DVI, DES) secure systems to have an external KVL.

Correct this has been answered several times in this post alone......

Other encryption modules may or may not be installed.

There are a few small pots on the back of the LCD display as you open up the radio - I know one increases the contrast of the characters, and I'm sure one may be the LCD backlight brightness. They look like flathead screw heads, and are really delicate.

Thank you!

But what mean these options:

1. Q159AC ADD: XTS2500 HARDWARE ENCRYPTION
2. Q629AD ADD: AES ENCRYPTION
3. Q57AD ENH: ONE (1) YR ENCRYPT EXPRESS

What do these options physically mean (for e.g. encryption module p/n XXXXX is installed, software option which enables bla-bla-bla & etc.)?

Someone particularly on everyone can tell them them?

Hardware encryptiuon means there was a encyption module installed from the factory if that is the orginal flash on the radio.

AES encyption is the type of module installed. You will need a keyloader to load encyption keys. This module may or may not be in the radio if you purchased the unit second hand, sometimes they are removed by sellers especially when selling outside of the US. These models also can be replaced with modules with additional other other encyption algorithims. You might want to read this topichttp://batboard.batlabs.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=61128. While it is not specifically about the XTS2500 much of the information will probably be of help to you at least giving you a better understanding.

What would ADP be an equivlent off in relation to different encryption. (how hard to hack?)

i believe ADP is technically easier to hack than the others, i don't know the bit number of encryption tho...

it would be more secure than a rolling code encryption or voice inversion.. but also remember, its ONLY available in digital modulation, NOT FM..

It was more geared to departments/agencies who didn't have the $$ to add OFB/AES modules to the radios/infrastructure at the time of order, but at the same time, just needed something that was "Scanner-Safe" - which for the most part it is.
