XTL2500 Flashcode issue

Post by WB4JGI »

This is an interesting issue, I don't know if it has been covered here on the board before or not but here it goes. I have some system radio here that have the flashcode of 500008-000480-0 which should include P25 trunking. The radio I checked had version Host/DSP 10.00.00/10.00.00.

When I went to the feature set the codeplug stated it had P25 trunking installed, but when I went to add a new trunking system to the radio I could only select Type II in the trunking field. Were normally I'm able to differentiate between Type II and Astro25 trunking types. FYI: the radio is programmed on a Smartzone 4.1 system and is working great at this time.

And yes I did have a valid and current ASK attached to the laptop while reading the radio with Version 14 CPS. I also checked the system key report and the Astro25 ASK was loaded in the software.

I'm curious to see if this is Host/DSP firmware related or to new of CPS being used on the radio. Or did Moto scew up when the radio was bought.

According to the radio information field the radio was flashed by the depot back in '08.

Has anybody seen this before with such an old firmware version.

From memory, the XTS2500 has two separate firmware options for trunking: one for 3600 baud (SmartNet, SmartNet II and SmartZone) and one for 9600 baud (so-called) (Astro trunking). Sounds like you only have the former.

Read the radio and, under Radio Information, there is a tab that shows installed options by option number and name.

Unlike the XTS2500, the XTL2500 does not as far as I know have the 3600 or 9600 only configuration option (or both if you have the interop flash feature), so that shouldn't matter.

It's possible it was a flashport goof-up. Even if you don't have a P25 software or advanced system key hooked up, you should still be able to chose Astro25 trunking (you'll just get an error until you get the system ID and personality straighted out...).

If you have the necessary supplies, you could try upgrading the firmware to the latest version. If you don't or that doesn't work, a trip to the depot is probably the only other option.

What radios do you own?: XTL5K, NX300, PD782, Spark Gap

Just for info. I have XTS2500 working on both a 3600 SZ 4.x system with Astro talkgroups and a 7.x Astro25 system.

Decoding Flashcode: 500098-001488-1
Platform: XTS2500

Q806: ASTRO IMBE Digital Operation
H14: Enhanced Digital ID Display
Q883: 3600/9600 Interoperability/Mixed Mode Signalling
G996: Over the Air Provisioning
H38: SmartZone Systems Operation
Q947: APCO Packet Data Interface
Q173: SmartZone Omnilink MultiZone Operation
Q361: ASTRO 25 9600 Baud Trunking
Q574: 9600 Baud Trunking

Decoded by the akardam.net FC Decoder v4

We let the system admins and Motorola work out what needed to be ordered to work on these two systems. No problem that I know of. Original Host/DSP was 12.00.xx

Oops: my eyes saw XTL but my brain read XTS.

I thought I'd update this post. Apparently Moto has sent us flashkeys for these XTL2500's and all it's doing is changing the model number from a W2 to W1 ,but the flashcode remains the same. These are 624CJB series serial numbers and were part of rebanding some time ago. I did one radio and it now has version 14 Host and DSP.

Aaaah... you had Reband models. Yes, those won't support Astro25 trunking even if flashed with it. Sounds like someone at the factory goofed the original order.

I didn't know that. That's why we got enough flashes to do the whole FD. Make sense now.
