In case no one saw it, Motorola annouced the APX6000XE radio at IWCE this week.

Nice little radio. As mentioned there, all it really needs are D rings clips built in and you wouldn't need a case for this!

Screen is a little smaller than the 7000 and a little lower "resolution" than the 7000, its still bright and shows you everything you need.

So, am I correct to say that the "XE" APX radios (the 7000XE, and now the 6000XE) are all basically "R", or "ruggedized" versions of the regular APX7/6000 ? With the larger controls, bigger top display, etc. one would assume that that's what the marketing was intended for.

Nice to see that they just didn't slap a screw on the back of the radio to pressurize it, and call that an "R" like they did with the XTS series, with NO case / knob differences. I like the fact that the new APX "XE" is now truly a real ruggedized radio, much like the Saber/Astro "R" radios were !

MT2000 man, both the 6000 and the 7000 are already available in "R" models, which includes Delta-T submersiblity. The XE radios are more like you expect, with an exoskeleton that protects but does not get in the way like the Saber-R series did. I think they did a good job on this latest model, just because it's rugged you shouldn't have to use different accessories.

Any rough estimates on pricing?

I just priced a fully optioned Sedona for $34,400. The APX6000XE might cost your about $5-6,000 retail.

This is a radio that I'd actually be willing to pay the price for. Would be nice to integrate this into our firefighting/EMS operations.

I put the 6000XE and 6000 side by side for the sake of comparison. Note: I got lazy and didn't correct the black 6000's width (oval /\/\ logo)

I would like to see one with a RSM attached to see how it would fit with the T grip in the way

I hope that the smaller display draws less current than the "big" display on the 7000 which, as it turns out,

Indeed. I have set my standby brightness on the front display to no illumination, which helps a great deal. It only lights up when needed.

I have already purchased a brand new VHF APX6000, equipped with P25 CAI operation. I bought it with a 2000 mAH battery option.
III model, of course. Full keypad and display.

This cost 3572 dollars.

It is likely that I was the first "civilian" to purchase one of these on the "white market".

I bought it from Bearcom.

Channel announcement is a standard feature. The audio quality of the channel announcements is superb.

ADP encryption is a standard feature as well, at least if you don't order a hardware encryption option.

My impression of the radio is extremely favorable. It has superb audio quality, excellent ergonomics, and its measured performance on my fully
equipped test bench is admirable. In-the-field performance gives no disappointments, either. It fully meets its published specs, and then some.


This is a winning product. Be sure that it will be a very strong seller and will find great popularity with any radio enthusiasts, when they become
available on the second hand market at prices that are attractive to those people.

Yeah, it cost me a lot, but I funded it with part of a windfall profit so I figured I'd go ahead and scratch that itch and be done with it. I'm not
unhappy with my decision.

FWIW: My Moto pricing on a new single band enabled only APX7000 with the same features above is $3661. I do like the 6000XE and almost would consider trading in my 7000 for two 6000XE's. Its what the 7000XE should have been. They are very nice little radios.

I have a APX7000R and the case and knobs are just like a non R version.
