Hacking an SL7550 into an SL4000 with depot

Post by oh2glg »

So, I have got an SL7550 to my hands and I'm about to change its firmware version from AA version to EMEA version. This change is somewhat needed and useful, since all my other Motorola DMR-radios are EMEA, so the CPS is also EMEA version. It is still next to impossible to have two instanced of different region CPS installed on the same computer (which is a pain in the buttox)

Only thing that bothers me is this: The TANAPA number of the SL7550 is PMUE3877ABCNAB and the Model is AAH81QCN9NA2AN. The EMEA version firmware includes versions PMUE3877AA, or BA or CA on the end, while the model remains the same (of course with the exception of first 2 letters on the model number).

So here is the question: If the TANAPA number is different by 2 letters, ie. PMUE3877ABCNAB vs PMUE3877AA vs. PMUE3877BA vs. PMUE3877CA, what it means?

And sure I know, i'm completely on my own when making such hacks. I know. But before I attempt to go forward, I'd like to know if here is others that have done the same trick?

I'm glad to announce the problem I wrote about is solved.

First thing that I missed doing before anything was to read the device and look, what it says it is, instead of just looking at the label on the backside of the radio.
Readind the radio made me to realize that the TANAPA type on this unit was indeed PMUE3877AA, not AB like it says on the label (do not care of rest of the letters, those are non-significant at this point).

So now that issue was solved and I was able to proceed.

Then, before doing anything else, I made sure I read all softpot-settings with Tuner and saved them as well.
Then I tried flashing the radio with EMEA firmware to replace AA-version. ... Success!

Well, now it is much more convinient to make codeplugs with other radios and copy/paste settings (where possible) between one model to another.

OH2GLG,

Just curious if the SL4000 EMEA radio will do FPP? I have several NA SL7550 radios that I wanted to convert to AS region SL1K for FPP purposes.

If the SL4000 will do FPP I will attempt it.

Regards,

Hmm, FPP? That would be nice.
Not sure, didn't even think of to try that at all..
Well, after looking for feature I must give you a dissappontment, I did not find such feature on this item, maybe it is a missing EID entitlement or if it is even availabe at all..? Not sure about that one. Does an SL7550 have such feature available?

The NA SL7550 does not have the ability to do FPP. I was hoping that if I changed the region I could enable FPP. It seems that the other Mototrbo models from other than the NA market has FPP capability.

Thanks Oh2glg!
