You can do the "WAC AMSS" trick. Program the unit as SmartZone, with up to 32 control channels. Then change the system type to WAC AMSS. The radio will keep all the control channels, and will now allow you to set affiliation to "on PTT". I haven't tested it on a system, but a few other board members say it works great.

Yes it is true. It will work if you program everything and then change the system to WACMSS however if your going to be traveling around so it has to switch site's it doesn't always switch. Or say there is a talkgroup your listening to and for whatever reason it switches sites then the radio doesn't always follow. Unless you hit the PTT to make it affiliate. The only true way to make sure your radio follows the system is to put it Automatic, however then your Tx'ing on the system. If you're legal to be on the system then it's no problem, which is why I leave mine on Automatic but I wanted to test it out on WACMSS and it doesn't always connect when you want to talk either. So do what you want to but just remember it's better to lose the talkgroup every once and a while then get busted for Tx'ing.

My advice to folks who want to use a trunked radio to monitor talkgroups on a SmartZone system on which they do not have their own valid IndID is to program the radio as if each zone is a separate system, and manually switch to the appropriate "system" as you travel. Lots of reasons, including that W-AMSS radios WILL transmit on their own, even if set to "PTT Affiliate."
