Astro Spectra upgrade, questions.

Post by tgo »

I have a mid-power astro spectra VHF and RSS versions through 8.50. When attempting to program TX or RX freqs in the new offsets (e.g., 154.0325), error message appears that a hardware/firmware upgrade is necessary.
I have established that the RF board must be replaced.
1. Is this something that can be done in the field, or must the radio be sent to RSC?
2. If it is a field repair, what is part # of the new 2.5 khz capable board?
3. Must the radio be flashed in addition to the RF board change?
Thanks, all.

The board is the HRN 6014 version C or D. It can be field replaced, and no flash is necessary.

The only problem is the cost: $614 or thereabouts w/o install. And there aren't a lot of them on the used market yet. Even though they have the same board number, with a revision change, they are NOT upgradeable - that is, you can't send them to motorola and have them do some changes on the board and send it back. It is a whole new board.

When the radio "boots up", the microprocessor on the board tells it what it is, so when you try to load a narrow band channel in it and it's not the right board - it barfs.

I'm still looking for a couple of those boards myself.

Hope this helps.
