Motorola XTS3000 Astro

Post by Mercenary »

Got a friend that just bought a Motorola XTS3000, 800Mhz radio and she was wondering if her radio can be programmed for RX only on Apco trunked systems. I know the MTX8000 will not do RX only on analog trunked system but i dont know anything about the 800Mhz models of the XTS3000.

In short...no.

However.

If she JUST wants to use the radio to recieve, you can go in and program both positions of the concentric switch to "TX Inhibit". Program the radio to NOT do smartzone, to NOT auto affiliate - as in, Affiliate on PTT.

This way, the radio won't ever try and talk to the system. This same trick works on the MTX8000 in analog as well.

XTS3000 Inhibit ?

Post by Islandboxer »

I am using an XTS3000 which I use legitamately on one system to monitor another. Is there a way I can make sure that my radio can't be inhibited. Example, if I use the wrong connect tone will it not be able to affiate as well as not acknoledge the inhibit signal and thus not get inhibited. I also will not beable to talk on it by mistake on the wrong system with the incorrect tone. I can't set the concentric switch to TX inhibit on both setting because I have to be able to talk on the other system.

Hmmmmm, I don't think so. If your radio is able to listen to the control channel (which it must, if you want it to track trunked conversations) then it can be inhibited, since the inhibit command is sent over the control channel. Even if you use the trick of setting up the trunked system(s) in the radio, then sitting on a conventional channel & using scan to monitor the talkgroups, you are still open to receiving an inhibit command. The only real way around it is to scan the voice channels conventionally (which kinda sucks), or using a trunk tracker.

Well, hummm.

If it does end up getting inhibited will it also inhibit the radio on the other system as well, as in is it radio wide or system wide? If it does get inhibited can it be uninhibited by writing the codeplug back into? It was last programed by CPS 3.0

A radio inhibit means exactly that...the radio is inhibited on a 'radio wide' basis. It will display 'self test' upon power-up, then nothing...it will appear dead.

As far as 'uninhibiting' it, with older radio models you could simply read & rewite the codeplug to the unit & be good to go. There is apparently more to it for the later series radios. Possibly writing a known good identical codeplug with regular RSS could revive it...or forcing in a codeplug with LAB could also do it. I haven't run across any yet, so I can't really say.

CPS to RSS

Post by Islandboxer »

Well I know if an xts3000 has been programed with CPS you can't read it with RSS, however, if you have an older codeplug from the same radio can you write it back into the radio or can you clone it into the radio? Would this then unihibit the radio and allow it to now be read by the older RSS?

By the way, this is a great site. I really appreciate all the great information everyone shares.

If you save your CP via your CPS, you can dump it back into the radio to bring it back from the inhibit. You can essentially find a ID that would never be shut off and program that into the radio, that would take care of the inhibit problem as well.

Kilgore: Smell that? You smell that?
Lance: What?
Kilgore: Napalm, son. Nothing in the world smells like that.
Kilgore: I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end...
