Programming a Spectra as a trunking scanner

Post by Battman »

I just got hired on as a security officer at the state capitol here in GA (its a start until i turn 21) and they have us using MTX-820 radios, pretty boring. Now im thinking about buying a Mobile spectra 800 radio for my truck, but before i buy one, can anyone tell me if there is a way to program with the RSS a typical type I or II system in it just to scan trunked radio traffic without having system keys or other secret information? I dont need it to transmitt with.Same thing for a MT-2000 portable.
Thanks

its easy to do.. but for the type II stuff you will need the system k.. just program the control channels into the radio... make the radio not affiliate... and program in your talkgroups... easy as that..

What radios do you own?: XTS2500, Sabers, Spectras

Like beaujo_fire said, you will need the syskey for it. I have one in my truck and it works great! Just don't plug a mic into it and key up, could end up getting in a lot of trouble for that!

spectra scanning

just a safety precaution for your spectra and peace of mind.. unplug the green coax going to the final, between the main radio and the pa. that way it cannot transmit at all. i have three spectras and they all work great that way. jimmy

Some spectra software has a special option in it for "Transmit Inhibited" per trunking personality... And it works just like it sounds, no transmissions of any kind.

After diabling AMSS and Auto Associate, are there any other features which should be addressed to prevent the Specta from transmitting anything on it's own? In asking this, I presume the mic is not connected.

Thanks,

Ok so anyone have a 800 spectra or 800 MT-2000 portable that they would like to sell? Must have full keypad and display (or rotary dial on spectra). Id greatly prefer a remote mount on the spectra. Looking for somthing slightly under ebay prices. Not much on there right now anyway. Thanks for the answers

You don't really need a " C " model since you won't and surely shouldn't be using those features. The main thing you should ask a seller is whether the Spectra is Zone Capable. Most Spectras with an MLM version of 6.xx are Zone Capable.

If you're getting a remote mount Spectra with a Rotary head, A-4, make sure that the whole thing is compatible. You are more likely to find the "A-5 or A-7 heads on those radios out there.

I know i dont need it but im a gadget type of person and i just like the look of a full keypad, heh for that matter i could just buy a scanner. Im going to do a pedestal mount in the truck, so i really need a remote mount radio.

Ill check on the zone capable feature, thanks.
