They did use MODAT, but they have since switched to Astro Digital, so its not used anymore. They may be running a couple non-astro channels that may still have it.

I think all the "Modat" terminals are now on 800 mhz. I remember the new building on Lukens that the city builtthree years ago to house them, and talk about grounding--WOW.Everything was grounded, cad-welded, and all equipment, cable trays, ect;, bonded.

Anyone have a pic of this building, or better yet the inside of it?

Sounds like it would be an interesting thread.

MDC-ID? That would be the squawk.

Take our word for it...if you don't need it, don't use it. It's cool once, half cool twice, and annoying the third time you hear it. Use it ten times and the guy you're talking to will try to stuff the radio up your nose, it's so irritating.

Trust me.

I'm with Elroy on this one. In short order, it becomes as annoying as the "roger beeps" on FRS. If you don't need it, don't bother.

They have roger beeps now on FRS? *shudder* I guess it was only a matter of time...

My $0.02 - Not having a radio capable of doing MODAT I can't say how annoyed I personally would be - Infact, I wouldn't mind playing.

I would seriously ask myself. Is it worth $1300-$1600 for a radio just to get those cute little beeps that will grow annoying by the end of the day?

Geez. I can just imagine finding FRS echo mics at Radio Shack. "Breaker Breaker one niner." Save us all.

If you really want to p@## off the other users, then in the RSS enable the PTT ID and select MDC Signaling.
BUT please take it back out of your radio soon, we pros don't think it is "cool" for very long. That goes for DTMF bursts too.

Luckily the our radios are programmed to mute the bulk of the MDC burst.
When we had a mixed fleet the sqwak was driving me nuts!
I guess if you dont have to hear it all day it is "cool sounding "sqwake"

enjoy

I truly appreciate all of the feedback on the MDC ID..we use it now in most of our departments..yes the "sqwake" can be very annoying. HOWEVER, LAPD has a very distinctive "sqwake" that does NOT sound the same as all of the typical MDC ID sqwake..Was wondering if it was different timing or something..Thanks for all the input..

Chad

A few months ago there was a thread on this board regarding Modat.

Modat and MDC have no similarities in format.

Good luck

Speaking of those annoying "Roger beeps" on the FRS radios, I wish the DOS feature would also mute those annoyances as well  Especially (on the newer FRS radios)the "call" feature, it drives my nuts

Nope, not a chance. Astro's, and older 1970's early 80's vintage mobile/portables, and only a select few of them.
