I'd say the first step is to quit using CPS....because the MTX838 is an RSS/DOS read and programmed radio!

Depends, on the black label on the back of the radio does it say "MTX-2000 Handi-Talkie"? Or just MTX Handi-Talkie, if MTX-2000 it should be able to be programmed by CPS of not use RSS.

Only the MTS2000 is CPS programmable...the MTX2000 can show up on MTX838 radio lables, it has nothing to do with whether it's an MTS2000 or not.

If you cannot read the radio with a known good programming platform, in DOS RSS 6.07.00, then the chances are very high the radio's codeplug is corrupted.

What are you using to read the radio? Computer specs, RIB type, DOS version would all be helpful.
