uhf spectra adding conv. modes to trunked rig

Post by The Kreick »

OK, heres a question..... i have a uhf mobile spectra (off ebay), and it came with one mode (a trunked mode) programmed. When i read the plug it shopws the max # of modes as 250, and the RSS will allow me to add up tp 128 conventional modes, but when i dump this to the radio, it boots up & says "MODE 0" and i can not see any othe the modes....what am i missing?

tnx....

What radios do you own?: Motorola, Icom, Sunair (HF).

The only type of Spectra that can accommodate over 128 modes is the Astro Spectra. Since you didn't post the model number of your specific radio, I can't comment any further than that.

I will say this much. I once resurrected a conventional Spectra that someone had buggered up the codeplug on, to the point that a 128-mode radio believed it had 250 modes (not physically possible due to memory chip size limits and firmware coding).

The only way I was able to restore it to sanity was to force-load a known-good codeplug image into it, then reprogram from there.

I hope that helps.

uhf spectra adding conv. modes to trunked rig

radio is a D44ZXA5JC7AK (and is a remote mount radio although the model # shows dash mount, so it may well be "pre-buggered")

Also, even with only one mode for trunkng, if i only add ONE mode conventional it sets the display to "mode 0 " and i can not select either mode. By reprogramming with the origional stuff everything returns normally.

I presume you are pulling the original codeplug, modifying it (after making a backup!), and then pushing it back into the radio?

I don't know if this is different if you have the radio setup for zones, but with my non-zone C7 Spectra, you have to add the conventional modes after the trunking modes (i.e. the trunking modes will always come first in the mode list). Also, the way you add modes is not exactly straightforward. For trunked modes, you have to use the trunk utility, which is under Trunking Configuration>Trunking Utility Menu>Add/Delete Personality and Trunking Mode, wheras conventional modes are handled by Mode Configuration>Mode Utility.

If you think all is well, I would go into the Mode Configuration and start F4 paging forward through all the modes that the programming software thinks the radio has. If you don't see the conventional mode that you just added, then as Bruce says, something may be fubar'ed.

Good luck!

In the origional program there was only one trunking mode, in mode 01 & i left that alone. If i add a conventional mode, after 01 named mode 02, the RSS lets me do it with no warnings or errors, but after i load it into the radio, all i get is mode 0 ... which was not there before - like it somehow messed up the trunking system as well. If i blow in the origional, i get the mode 1 trunking system like before & it seems happy... Could my RSS be to0 old maybe & it isnt adding the modes like the radio wants? I am goingot try to maybe add another trunking system & see if that blows it up as well....

KC7GR is incorrect... Smartnet (C7) radios will support 250 modes (15 systems of 16 talkgroups, plus 10 conventional channels). If the radio firmware is new enough, it may support reducing the number of trunking systems present to increase the available conventional channels.

The remote-mount kit is fairly common to find added on later. I doubt that's your problem.

I'd bet that someone has gone playing with bitbanger when they didn't have enough clues to do so and has fubared the radio.

this *is* a smartnet radio, so you may be right. I will have to look at the bits & see what is up.

it may be a while - work has beena bear lately!
