Portables Needed !
Hi All,
Can someone point me in the right direction??
We need to buy 10 new portables. Anyone who knows where we could best spend our Volenteer FD money would be appreciated.
We need 10 each New SP50 VHF radios with fast chargers. They will need to be 10 channel. On one of those channels a Quick Call option is needed.
===============
....So after discussion the SP50 aint' the guy afterall especially as (added board) QC II is required.
So perhaps as suggested, as the P1225's are QC II ready out of the box - Why not use them? Any Thoughts re P1225's?
Our users favor a simple radio and find the 1250's (we have some) more than they want. Hummmm....

Hi:
I deal with [ Many ] issues much like yours on
a weekly basis.
The major problem is, SP50's are a Popular
Radio, Easy to program, simple to use, and
well , there performance is equal to the price
value.
The problem that some groups have is understanding the
Acc'y and battery issues.
The Batteries for SP50's ( and they are more expensive now )
than a month ago, is that depending oin what quality one desires
has a impact on cost.
Batteries have a user price of 35.00 / and eevn wholesale
they are around 25.00
So for 10 Radios, you have a 250.00 / 350.00 amount not
includimg sales taces or shipping.....And with a Fire Depeartment
the RADIOS MUST BE DEPENDABLE, so the use of old worn out
cheap batteries, although cheap, may cost someone their life
if the radio goes dead.
Another issue is your [ Rapid Chargers ] or [ Standered Chargers]
range from about 60.00 to 25.00, and again, that is another
250.00 / 600.00 price amount.
Antennas, fall into the same class, they run about 10.00, and
that is 100.00
Next comes the Radio !! Now there is a BIG difference between
a SP50 that has been used in a Major Construction Yard, verses
one that has only been used on weekends, and well although
you might find one / some for 50.00 / 75.00, I would not
hold my Breath about them being in perfect order.
Todays world, you sorta get what you pay for, and many
times 1/2 of what you pay for is who you buy from.
Will the persons support the radios after the sale? Is
he /she been in the Two-Way business along time....
Referencies [ MEAN ALOT ] these days, and I would recommend
looking around and seeing what you can get for your bucks, but
one thing for sure, don't toss it away on old beat up radios that
may cost you more in the long run to maintain...
But I do not think you will be too lucky in finding a
Brand New / Or one like New with a New Battery, a
and Rapid Charger, fully programmed for the Price
of lets say a FRS Radio.
Email me direct @ [email protected], and I can
give your some more detailed advice....

Thanks
Monty,
Thanks for taqking the time to write your considered reply!
You are the man who also knew CR Crtawford I think. Did you also know Bill Miller? Now that would be something! Those were interesting days. I was Crawfords Mt. Wilson guy - I lived up there most of the time keeping the old 2 see 39's cooking!
Monty I will contact you directly about what can be done, again I appreciate the consideration.

2 Tone Board
Nand,
Top of the afternoon to you!
I was speaking with Monty who suggested that an upgradt to the 1225 would eliminate the board option. Makes me think....
This is getting difficult. The FD NEEDS the page option as all 5 FD's are dispatched from one 911 center - each with a different page.

As most have stated here... I would stay away from the SP50. I work part time as a Paramedic at Canwest Global Park (baseball) during the summer and they use SP50's. Not a day goes by that some sort of problem with them comes up (I use my own GP300). Some of the problems that have occurred include programming being dropped, battery life, etc. In my opinion, it's a radio that is just a few steps above a FRS (in quality).
Consider also that the radio, when (or if) dropped, breaks into at least 2 pieces!!! (Depending on height).
The P1225 is a GREAT radio. I picked one up for a friend of mine who works with me at a rural Ambulance service, and he fell in love with it right off the bat!! It uses the same charger as a GP300 as well as the same accessories (great if you happen to have any GP300, P110 kicking around). The QC2 option helped to eliminate one extra piece of equipment off of his belt (namely a pager).
If it wasn't for the fact I came across a Kenwood TK270G for a song, I would have purchased a P1225 for myself!!
Hope this helps you out!

Appreciate the Info!
Thanks to all for the input - I can now make the correct decision. This board is great and again thanks for everything!!
We will be getting the P1225s w/ add in QCII board.
