Need some help with file recovery

I wouldn't hold my breath over trying to restore those photos.

Best thing would be to try taking the photos again.

Couple of questions:

First thing to do:

Throw the write block switch on the SD Card NOW.

Secondly, what have you tried so far? Popping it in/out in read/write mode, and reading and writing to the media - will come close to ruining your chances of recovering the data.

There are programs out there (however, most require dongels) that can recover the data.

Encase is one great example.

However, this is considering you haven't screwed with the card. Since it's rewriteable memory, and not a hard drive, there could be another issue you, nor I are aware of that would prevent the potential recovery.

Okay... I haved locked the card. I think another picture might have been taken after the format, which I'm sure will cause further problems. I do have a card reader, so I do have access to the card through the computer. It shows empty at the moment.
I haven't really tried anything at this point. The program you mentioned lists for $425.00

The subject of the pics I want to recover is no longer with us. I'd really like to be able to do this.

What are the pictures worth to you? If they're worth a lot (sounds like it if the subject has passed away), you need to realize that a. you're not an expert and b. this is going to be expensive.

I'd call up OnTrack and see how bad they want to rape you for it. If the data is retrievable, they can get it off. Expect a bill of $1K or better. I've dropped 5 figures with them before pulling critical financial data off of failed drives... they're damn good, and they have a price tag to match.

A program I have used with camera cards in the past several times is called Davory.

Here is a link I found for the demo version. I don't know the validity of that link I just did a quick search and picked the first I found so you might want to try to look around a bit more for security sake.

As for the demo, I tried it first before buying to see if it would work. It's limited to 200k but it will atleast show you if it's worth pursuing. When I tried it the demo showed me 200k worth of the image and the rest was blank.

It was $50 when I purchased the full version a couple of years ago. It's fairly simple but works great. I will allow you to search from a list of numerous file types, or you can search by file names, etc...

I used it to recover 90+ images from a camera that was used at a crime scene. The camera was running low on batteries and somehow the compact flash card came up empty when I went to read it on the computer. All the photos plus some other older ones were recovered perfectly. I have since used it on several types of media like Sony sticks, floppies, USB drives, ZIP's etc....to recover MPG, AVI, text files, all kinds of stuff.

I haven't tried it on a formatted card but I can give it a test tomorrow at work and see if it will work.

Mancow's sounds good. I had a need to recover some hard drive data last week. In my search, it turns out there's many programs for recovering digital camera media...must be a booming business nowadays. A few which looked promising were:

Prices vary from $29US to $89US...not a bad price if it's important to you.

If you have a UNIX system near you, and can make a DD image of the card and get it online somehow, I'll dump it in to encase and see what I can recover....

Keep in mind... the more things that "touch" or write to that card... the less the chances are of you getting anything off it.

You can get the 30 day fully functional trial. I have used it to recover photos from formatted SD memory, it also works good when you delete a picture by accident.

Well, I tried PhotoRescue Pro, and most of the pics are there. I can't recover them without registering the software though. I guess I'll pay up tomorrow.

Bummer, they must have changed that. The trial used to recover up to ten photos or something like that and then pop up a nag screen to click through before it did the next ten, and so on.
