CDM1550LS+ MDC Emergency Decode Questions

Post by Vercomm »

We have a crew working at a sandpit and they want to be able to turn off the main generator from their handhelds with the push of one button.

I think I have it figured but wanted to ask:
We are gonna use PR860's or HT750's and have the top orange button be set for Emergency. I've tested it with some of my rental radios and the 750's Tx the MDC emergency(it looks like the 860's will to). Unfortunatley I have a CDM1550LS which does not support MDC1200 anything. I just loaded it with the newest firmware even. We plan to use a CDM1550LS+ for the application.

So we want the portables to be able to push the orange emergecny button and have it send MDC emergecny to the 1550 which upon receiving the MDC will activate a low output through the 16pin which will control a relay. When the CDM receives the emergency we want the radio to output the low until the radio is physically reset somehow. Any suggestions or hints to help with this?

Thanks,

Jamie

you need a non ls 1550, the ls versions won't decode the emergency signals.

I just took a look through the codeplug of a VHF CDM1550LS+ and it will allow me to decode/encode all of the MDC (PTT, Emergency, Selecall, Radio Check, etc..). You must order the 160 channel version of the CDM1550LS+(AAM25KHF9DP6AN) to get all the MDC features. If you order the 16 channel version of the CDM1550LS+(AAM25KHF9DP5AN) you only get limited MDC features in LTR only.

I do not believe the CDM will output any external indication on the 16-pin connector when it receives an emergency MDC signal. It will output a programmable high/low on pin 4 when it receives a call alert, sel call, or MDC Message according to the help file, for a maximum of 20 seconds. It does not mention the MDC Emergency at all. I checked into this at one point a few years ago for one of our sales guys, and although I wasn't exhaustive in my quest, I do not believe it can be done 'out of the box' so to speak.

I still want someone to tell me why my 403-470 CDM 1550 160 Channels Won't do MDC. I find people tend to use the 160 Channel rule for whether the radio can do MDC stuff on conventional.

Apparently just because the radio will do 160 Conventional Channels doesn't mean MDC on Conventional.

Maybe a firmware upgrade would help me, but I don't have the kit.

Yeah, I believe you sent me the codeplug at one point, and yes...it's 160 channel with no MDC in conventional. I forget, was the model number "6AN" at the end? And what was the firmware version, by the way? I've forgotten if you told me. I've never come across another unit like it...ever. Thus why we tend to equate channel capacity with MDC capability...it's followed it in every other instance!

for the most part i've found that the cdm1550's that end in 6an are pretty much like the ht1550, it will do all 160 conventional channels plus ltr. and i've never seen a cdm that can do all 160 channels and not do mdc? what's the exact model number, have you tried writing a codeplug from a radio that does mdc to overwrite that one?

if someone is willing to email me a codeplug i'm willing to try, I can configure an MDC personality however the options to assign Signaling to the conventional personality are greyed out.

email me with the board feature and i'll hit you back so you get send it.

firmware is: R04.00.00

Seems, old maybe? How can I get this upgraded..?

I think it's a 6 AN, let me read the radio and i'll report back later today

Hmmm...I've only seen firmware versions that old in "LS" models, not "LS+" units, as they came along later. I think you might have a regular LS with expanded channel capacity, but still no conventional MDC. I don't suppose the label is still on the radio?

Well the problem is that the radio came with a new head and no label. I suspected it was a 1250 when i bought it, however i verified the menu and back buttons worked beforehand and noticed the different stuff in the menu. Di a version exist that gave you ls trunking plus 160 on conventional?

When i get back home tonight ill check the model number.

i think the whole issue here is that a different subroutine in the firmware is used to transmit/decode the MDC when the radio is in LTR mode, and theres not sufficient flash memory in older models for both routines. Is there a significant physical difference between the 5an's and 6an's?

Well, the issue is Motorola for a time offered both the CDM1550 & the CDM1550-LS, so they left out the conventional MDC in the "LS" units. They later amalgamated both into the CDM1550-LS+, and offered two tiers...the 5AN & 6AN models.

I don't know if Motorola offered the "LS" with 160-channel capacity...any brochures I might've had on them are long gone...but your unit causes me to think they must've.

If it's indeed a plain "LS" model variant, I am not aware of a method to turn it into an "LS+"...I believe it's a different 'tanapa'...or a different main board, in Motorola speak.

another thing is that the 6an radios are kinda rare, not too many of them around. nobody can even think about helping you out with a different codeplug until you give us the exact model number. and i think somebody else was right, if it's got revision 4 firmware it's not an ls+ model, they came out after that revision. one other thing is that this radio may not be a cdm1550 at all, it could be an overseas version of the radio and it don't use mdc, it may have 5 tone in it?

Sigh...

Im going to take it into a dealer on monday to see what they say about a firmware upgrade. Ill ask them to tell me what it really is.

For some time between me and some other board members, this radio has been nicknamed the hermafradite radio, because none of us have ever seen anything alike it.

What are current firmware versions for all different variants of the 1550, that may help me.

The firmware version is the same, regardless of whether its a CDM1550, CDM1550-LS, CDM1550-LS+. The updating software determines which firmware file matches up with the radio, and dumps it in. The latest version on MOL for all CDM mobiles is 5.05.19

you're going to have to read the radio to get the exact model number. what's the serial number, from that i can at least tell you the month and year it was made.

Definite "LS", as it's a 2000 year model. LS+ came later. You're stuck with no conventional MDC, afaik.

How can you tell what year it was made from just the serial number? I know the date code on the moto batteries, but curious on the date code for radio serial numbers.

Upgraded the Firmware in this radio along with some other CDMs today.

Now has Version R05.05.19

That was basically a waste. I guess I just need to buy a different control board for this radio, and find someone who needs LTR, because I sure don't.

the three letters of the serial number

first letter is the factory where the radio was manufacturer

second letter is the year (A for 2000, B for 2001, C for 2002 etc)

third letter is the month (A or B for January, C or D for February etc and I believe I and Q are not used [don't quote me on this last part])
