can you imagine some kind of gateway that will allow TMS (the rest of the worlds TMS...) interface with a public safety radio system?

Not me!

I would much prefer when not working to have the ability to just have a cell phone with me at times. While I may have a portable in the car, I am not going walking through the mall with a radio on my hip if I don't need to have it......

My point simply is there are a ton of people who would rather carry a small cell phone with them all of the time that a two way radio with them all of the time. Sorry, I just don't wear a radio on my hip 24/7. When works over.....radio is on the desk. I may have it out for some casual conversation with a few others from time to time and yes, I do always keep one in the POV for emergencies. No way would I have one with me all of the time.....

No reason to, I especially don't want people to be able to identify me as a possible authority figure all of the time. Everyone has a cell phone. See someone with a XTS radio on you automatically think Police, Fire, EMS or some other public group. Yes, I know lots of these radio are privately owned, but I choose not to have one on all of the time.

Errr, I think you are fibbing - how do you get more than 8 characters into your Soft ID field?

Simple, it's actually FL 01/92. But, you get the idea. I think a softID can be more than 8 digits, can it not? The display is something like 14 characters so it's certainly capable of it.

Heard a rumor from a reliable source that late '07 Big M plans to release flash upgrades that will allow omni-link between discrete P25 trunking systems, as well as accept any NAC, not just those within 8 of the system #.

Yeah a mate and I were playing with our radios one day and we couldn't work out why our Digital ID's would not come up and why our displays would go blank... Turns out soft id was enabled but we hadn't set an ID up in CPS.

I think its a 7.x smartzone feature.
From the last MTUG it will let radio to radio and dispatcher to radio send SMS messages.
It's good for an adreess or phone number etc or something confidential to an officer. Much quicker and less resources than private call

I see hilarious results from this, based on officers thinking they have a new form of secure communication and the next line of scanners coming with a decode feature.

played with it for about 20 mins last night.

a little on the complicated side.

two types of messages (quick) and stored.

can be edited on a per transmission basis

requires IP stuff to be set up in CPS

will work radio to radio w/o infrastructure support

will work direct or repeated (also set up in CPS)

more to follow

and yes, the computer key is now functional

Hey Doug,

Can you check Soft ID with CPS9 and firmware 9?

Looks like they added ARS login field in the radiowide/general tab. From what I see the ARS login is also the Soft ID. On our radios the ARS login is checked but greyed out. I think you need the packet data option to edit it.

Thanks

Soft ID, if the radio is option capable, should be under Astro Systems>Astro Configuration>Soft ID, not Radio Wide>General...

Yes, pre- CPS 9.0. Try the new CPS. The Soft ID checkbox is selectable but the name field is greyed out. When putting the ? cursor over it , it states Soft ID uses the ARS login username.

OTAP is what we've all been waiting for forever. Watch the tutorial video, its even better. Bad thing is, those of you without trunked systems are out of luck for now and those of us with trunked systems are looking at more money to use the feature. Just how much remains to been seen. I could be wrong and it could be capable already but just as with the text messaging service, not too much documentation out yet. I do look forward to the day I can program a radio or radios without having to leave my seat :)

There's a sticky in the astro forum about setting up off network text messaging. Probably stands as the only documentation about how to setup and configure that off network.

I just got my first version 9 radio back from the depot and the ID display does work on a 3600 baud trunking analog talkgroup now like it did on on the P25 Talkgroups.
