Dealer updated codeplug on me?

Post by rileym »

Hi All,

I bought my first ASTRO radio the other day, knowing it had last been programmed with CPS Version 9.00.00. Knowing that I had this, I bought the radio. I then sent it in to get a quote on a screen replacenent. They quoted me twice as much as wiscomm, so I asked for it back. I went to read the radio today as my data cable had arrived, and it is saying that it cannot read the radio due to a newer codeplug.... Did the dealer read it on me in order to get my programming done through them?

Dirty trick. Too bad I didnt have the cable sooner, I would have made sure I could read it before sending it to them.

Thanks

They probably were not trying to be sneaky or anything as you might believe. It is pretty standard to put a radio on the bench for testing when you recieve it. That also includes reading the radio and maybe even reprogramming the unit. Those with legitimate subcriptions to the CPS don't have a issue when this occurs.

If it's already been programmed with something higher than CPS R09.xx.xx, then trying to write an older codeplug into it with CPS R09.xx.xx will do nothing for you.. The CPS reads the codeplug version before it even attempts to write a plug to it...

If your radio has old firmware, programming it with the latest CPS will not add any new features unless you have the latest firmware to match..

Might want to consider buying a subscription from Motorola for the CPS. Well worth it for a current production radio. It will keep you in updates for 3 years and you won't have issues like this on this product anymore.

Also you'll be covered if you decide to get other Astro25 radio like the XTS5000 XTS/MT/PR1500.

If in fact the radio went in at CPS 9 and he gets it back at CPS 12 without having any work done to the radio, that's kinda a dirty tirck the dealer pulled. Why on earth would you need to write a customers radio if the customer didn't specifically tell them to do so. Dealer might need to read the radio to pull serial/model info, but why write the radio?

Next time ya got problems or issues with your /\/\otorola radios, try the board here as there are great people here who are more then willing to help out. I might have suggested you just get a replacement front cover from panter which costs around $120. However not knowing the exact issue the 2500 has, new frount housing may or may not have fixed the problem.

txshooter is correct, your only option now is to upgrade your CPS subscription.

I saw Panter's listings on ebay for those covers a couple days back.... And Wiscomm is actually out of the displays, so I can still consider it. My cover is in pretty good shape tho.

How much will that cps sub cost me?

Also, once you have the sub, are you considered legit to do programming for other people and charge them for the service, or do you have to be a moto dealer to do that?

Thanks Guys,

Matt

P.S. would be greatful if admins could consider making me a legit member... Thanks

I agree. I may use my point to get a free first programming off them, but I'm a bit unhappy to say the least. Especially as a college student on a budget, I splurged for the radio knowing I had the software for it, now because I decided to have them give me a quote for the part, i cant program it. Its nuts.

I traded my beloved HT1000 personal duty radio plus a bit of cash for it, and got a great deal. I suppose worst case I could find another HT1000... or a saber....

Our PD uses P25 for their dispatch, and its nice to hear them (when they're not in DES-XL). I have a Icom F70DS that doesen't do mixed mode very well (lots of noise switching back and fourth). I was excited to try a moto digital for once.... we'll see if this one works out.

That dealer as well only costs $15 a program. So I'm not totally shot. I just enjoy the task of sifting through features and what not that I'm sure you all do as well. I always gotta pick things apart for fun.

If anybody wants this radio please send me a pm. May consider trades.

Sure you can put a Mod 3 housing on it, but other than it looking like a Mod 3 when your done, it will still function as a Mod 2....

Make sure you get the correct LCD for the unit. The VHF takes a C01 IIRC. There was a post about it not to long ago.

Yep, C04 display is specifically for the XTS2500 VHF/R1-R2 UHF

8)

Just a refresher:

C01 - older 800 5000's (using the oldder NTN9564 vocon) and 800 2500's.
C02 display is for VHF 5K's and 800 5K's using the "new" NNTN4717 vocon.
C03 UHF Range 1 & 2
C04 display is specifically for the XTS2500 VHF/R1-R2 UHF

Motoroloa service did the same thing to me, and after I whined long enough they sent me a copy of the latest CPS for the product for free. Along with a strongly worded suggestion that I should invest in a current CPS subscription. :)

Alright, I'm stuck....

I replaced my screen in my XTS2500 after that moto dealer quoted me a price on doing it for me of double the part...

However, after replacing the screen myself, the backlight works, and the screen still does not.

Any Ideas?

This dealer broke the flex cable on the previous screen when they said it was bad.... The backlight worked on the old screen before they took it in So i'm thinking that screen (minus the broken flex) is still good and its something else?

Would I most likely be covered in any case if I just order a new cover with all electronics?

Thanks

Makes me wonder if you have a model 1 shoved into a model 2 case......

What is the model number of this radio?

Nope, no self test. I bought it from a guy on RR who said it stopped working gradually.

The front buttons do work, so I'm thinking it is a M2.

Model number I will have to read from the radio - has no tags.

Sorry about the two topics, I figured the screen and CP were two separate issues, my bad.

I'd say either get out of it or send it to the Moto Depot. If you depot it, it will come back with a short warranty in case they missed anything. Essentially the depot takes in the radio with the described problem, fixes it, and anything else they find wrong including cosmetic problems. It's a flat rate but can be fairly pricey. Your local shop can process it for you.

It's a good radio but I can TOTALLY sympathize with you about a good radio that just keeps failing. I have a CDM1550LS+ that I depoted, twice, before I started working at a shop myself and it was depoted yet again! It works great now...

Alright,

I ordered a new front cover from Panter.

at $110 it seems like a nice easy fix at this point.... Sheesh.

If anybody needs a C04 Display module... still in box... let me know.

Still, anybody think it might be the "display board" and not the display itself?

Also, can anybody fix a flex broken directly off the back of a screen?

What firmware do you have?

I know that with the XTS3000, newer displays don't always work with older firmware. Whether that is the case with your 2500, i dont know... but i guess it might be worth looking into.

Just a thought.

Did you change the kaypad board also? There is a motorola SRN out right now, for xts2500's with display issues such as blank screen, garbled or inverted characters etc caused by cold solder joints on the keypad pcb. One of the panter88 radios like yours I got had that problem.

hmm. Keypad board... Is it a part of the display, or the main RF portion?

I got another full front cover from Panter, so I figure it cant be anything with the cover or it's electronics....

Where is this keypad board?

Fixed by n7maq for a resonable price.

He did what two motorola repair centers (one depot authorized) could not.

I highly recommend him for any sort of buys/trades/etc as it is evident he really knows his stuff.

It was an easy fix, the LCD flex just needed re-soldered.
