Diference between two FPP types?
Q52 Federal Government FPP [ a25p ]
Q53 FCC FPP And Radio Cloning [ a25p ]
What is the difference between the capabilites of these two types of FPP?
I understand (maybe incorrectly) that the Q53 version requires a dongle attachment like the JT1000's FPP programming key.
I'd imagine that it's not required for the Q52 version.
If that's right, what else is different about these two different FPP types?

Q52 FPP by itself pre R10, does not require any dongle or programming key. Q53 by itself does require a programming key no matter what Host you are using. Q52 + Q53 paired together does not require a dongle or programming key.
Q53 in a flashcode will not allow the use of any trunking.
In a R09.xx.xx radio, you can have Q52 by itself with trunking, and both will co-exist in the radio nicely without much issue. In a R10.xx.xx and above radio, you need Q53 by itself with the key, or Q52 + Q53 in order to get FPP to show up as a menu option.
Other than that, there really isn't much difference between the two. Back in the day, they were orig supposed to be seperate options, not paired together. Q52 was designed for Fed or Gov use, with no key needed. Q53 was for the average consumer, and needed a key to satisfy the FCC. Somewhere down the road, both options started showing up paired together in radios, when you really didn't need both options to get FPP working. It seems that the trend caught on, and the combo of Q52 + Q53 stuck and carried on, and that combo is now required for FPP to work on CPS/Host R10 and above radios.

Stupidity creates job security!
If your radio has old firmware, programming it with the latest CPS will not add any new features unless you have the latest firmware to match..
CPS = Customer Programming Software, Not CPS Software.

Re: Diference between two FPP types?
Cool, thank you for that info. It's much appreciated.
I'm asking because I want to know which option I would be better off with when I find the radio with FPP in it that I'll buy.
Since I have no need for trunking at all, particularly on VHF, either version should be just fine. The dongle is like 30 bucks, IIRC, and I can afford that.

Re: Diference between two FPP types?
More good info to keep on file. And that's not that bad a price, considering.
Thanks!
I'm a bit mystified, though...as I understand it, the FPP dongle for the APX7000 is about 30 bucks. I would have guessed the 5K version to
be about the same.
Oh well, when someone UNDERSTANDS how Motorola sets its prices, someone please explain it to me.
