XTS5000 Text Messaging Service HOWTO

Since documentation on how to do this is apparently nonexistant even from Motorola at this time, here's something to get you started...

Feel free to reply with questions, feedback, etc.

P.S. This isn't the thread to be discussing restaurants in... let's keep it on-topic.

It may be possible to use TMS on a Model II, in limited mode (predefined recipients and messages). CPS would seem to support this mode of operation.

I noticed you made reference to only the XTS5000 series.
Is it possible to use a lower tiered radio platform, like the XTS3000 with the same options enabled, or is this germain only to the 5K model?

Thank you!

TMS is only available on Astro25 radios that are model and option capable, such as the XTL's and XTS2500 and XTS 5000. It is not available on the previous generation of Astro radios.

Did you ever find that in addition to W947/Q947 that H14/G114 and G182 were required to accomplish this? I know it's been a while, but I'm just beginning the process.

You don't need G182 Enhanced RCP.

Thanks. Does anyone know if the Advanced Messaging option on the 2500/5000 would interface with TMS capable portables?

Thanks much again.

Howdy,

I have been playing around with this feature on the XTS 5000 M2's for a while now. Has anyone successfully sent a text witht he M2's? I am able to write the predefined Txts, cycle through the list of txts, select the radio I want to send the txt to but when I press the PTT to send the Txt I get "No Response".

Also, a bit on the same not I have been able to program paging and calling on the 5000's. Paging works great, the calling however isnt so easy. I am able to get the target Radio to ring but when I use the target radios PTT to try and open a private net I transmit out over the air. If there is LMR calling there should be a way to call an LMR and talk on a private net right?

Any help would be appreciated.

I believe it's 160 character limit.

A pre-defined or "Quick-Text" message programmed into the radio is limited to 50 characters.

A hand-typed text message is limited to 200 characters.

So,besides having firmware 9 or above, all you need is H14 Enhanced Digital ID Display and Q947 APCO Packet Data Interface for TMS to work?
In Memory of those that serve.

Thanks. I set up both of my radios like this but they won't send or receive texts. Are BOTH radios supposed to have the same things in the boxes in the CPS? Can I text in Direct/Simplex mode?
