APX7000 "Optional Board Assembly"?

Post by RADIO43 »

Group,

When looking at the Basic Service Manual for a Full Keypad Dual sided APX7000, it makes reference of a "Optional Board Assembly" (Sec 1:8-14 and Sec 1: 8-36) . The board is mounted just above the "Expansion Board Assembly" (Part # MHLN6977_). Is the "Optional Board Assembly" the Bluetooth Board (Part # NNTN8160AS)? I could not find anywhere in the Basic or Detailed Service Manual that states this.

Thank you in advance for any help.

IIRC, the bluetooth assembly is supposed to be built in to the speaker assembly/flex in some fashion, supposedly not field upgradeable.
Kilgore: Smell that? You smell that?
Lance: What?
Kilgore: Napalm, son. Nothing in the world smells like that.
Kilgore: I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end...

From what I have heard,Motorola wants$155.00 for the part, the Bluetooh module.

Then another $400.00 for the flash upgrade to support the bluetooh option and the labor to install the bluetooh daughter board.

It has to be sent back to Moto for the module installation and the flash code option to be flashed.
In Memory of those that serve.

Would having the radio flashed for Bluetooth and no Bluetooth Board installed in radio generate a "Hardware board absent" when powering on the radio up?

I believe the APX6000 (xe?) is coming with the BT board. What is also curious is that those boards are also showing with encyption boards.

My source has that in June or July NNTN8160A (not the AS part) will be the bluetooth board for the existing APX7000's. If it will be a depot only item or not, I do not know.

I have been told this is more than likely the case. The service manual says it needs to be sent to the depot for this issue. My guess is to replace the bad board or to turn the feature off with depot software.

From what I have been told this is a new error coming up with newer firmware, not sure if that is right or not. It looks like the BT option can be ordered and installed yourself. Personally I don't need the BT option so I will live with the error.

BT module part number is MNUK6000BS and was briefly orderable but has been reflagged as depot/factory only and can't be ordered. Radios with BT in the flashcode and enabled in the CP will lead to an option board not present error message on radio bootup but doesn't affect operation. The board is certainly able to be installed in the field.

Isn't NNTN8160AS the part number for the board?

NNTN8160AS shows APX PORTABLE OPTION BOARD SVC KIT ($200 list) - 3 days, not available currently - but it is orderable.
MNUK6000BS doesn't show up as orderable...

So, is the NNTN8160 everything you need (with the exception of the flash option) to add BT?

Not sure....is BT a flashcode option or somehow else encoded in the radio. I don't think mine has that in the flashcode but I still show the error.

Hell if Jeff wants to try to order it I will be the guinea pig.

I am speaking to the MNUK6000BS part number from experience, it's sitting in my radio but I have been too lazy to mate it with the ruggedized mission critical earpiece, the thing makes my ear hurt and weighs too much anyway. I don't know anything about the service board but I'd be surprised if it ended up supporting bluetooth out of the box. Maybe it's a blank option board or something.

Apparently the NNTN8160AS BT board will only mate with Motorola Bluetooth earpieces. The link between the radio and earpiece is encrypted. I have been trying to mate my APX with various non Motorola bluetooth devices with no luck. One of the factories I work with is Plantronics, so I am pretty sure I know how to do this.

On the APX you will also need this firmware option added:
QA00583 Enable Bluetooth Operation

In CPS under Radio Wide/Bluetooth the Pairing Type option is hard set to LF MPP. If this function were unlocked, my guess is that non Motorola BT devices could be mated.

Correct, the APX line uses near field comms and a 128 bit AES link, pretty sure no consumer earpieces will support that. The TRBO unit uses standard BT "encryption." Good to know the NNTN8160 is the correct part number I will need to order some up.

Okay.. Got my NNTN8160AS today and when opened up the box, the Manual that came with the board says its the "Bluetooth Option Board (MNUK6000A) Installation. After installing, I have the Bluetooth Icon on the screen but nowhere can I find a place in the CPS Menu to enable the Bluetooth Options. I am guessing this is due to the radio not being flashed for Bluetooth or my vision is going... Hahaha

Also under Option/Expansion Board in CPS:

Board Name - Bluetooth
Board Tpe - OB01
Board Firmware Version - R01.00.00

Yes you need the option:
QA00583 Enable Bluetooth Operation flash

I now have the wackiest looking radio flash:

Does adding the board add the option to the flash or is that an upgrade as well?

Mine is not flashed for any option board but yet it comes up with the error looking for one.

The flash option upgrade is separate. I think the non contract cost is $400.00. Someone please correct me if I am wrong on that.

So if I don't have anything in my flash that says I should have it, back to why do I get the error saying it is missing?
