Old Version: Host – R09.20.42, DSP – R16.00.02
CPS Version: R17.00.00
Important Notes:
Abstract: R16.00.01 was the last release where 4M updates will be made
System Platforms Affected: System independent
Special Configurations: N/A
Description: R16.00.01 was the last release where defect repairs were added to the
4M radios. The program memory space on these radios has been consumed, and no
further additions are planned. 4M radios include ASTRO Spectra Plus with old
version Vocon board and XTS2500, XTS1500, MT1500 and PR1500 radios with model
numbers ending in ‘AN’. ASTRO Spectra Plus radios with new Vocon board will be
upgraded to R09.20.42 Host, R16.00.02 DSP and R05.07.15 UCM. This will occur
automatically; personnel FLASHing radios will not need to be aware of which Vocon
board is present.

New Features:

Abstract: Mixed Vote Scan feature supported
System Platforms Affected: Conventional Multi-cast
Special Configurations: N/A
Description: The mixed vote scan feature supports a combination of Conventional and
Voting scan modes such that a mixed scan list can be programmed that contains both
conventional and voting scan members. Previously, Conventional scan and Vote scan
operation were mutually exclusive.

Abstract: GPS Location on Conventional PTT supported
System Platforms Affected: Conventional with Data
Special Configurations: GPS-capable microphone attached; portable radios supported.
Description: The feature adds the capability to send a GPS location report on PTT
release while on a Conventional APCO channel. To prevent audio throughput delay or
voice truncation, the location report is generated after PTT is released and the
data packet follows the voice transmission. PTT trigger can be used along with
other location report triggers (Emergency, distance, etc).

Abstract: ASTRO Conventional TG now can be modified through FPP on XTS
System Platforms Affected: Conventional
Special Configurations: Keypad-equipped XTS5000 and XTS2500
Description: The feature addition provides the ability to create/modify Astro
Conventional TalkGroups using Front Panel Programming. The number of ASTRO
Conventional TalkGroups has been increased from 96 to 256, and the number of
Conventional TalkGroup lists increased from 6 to 16.

Issue Updates:
Abstract: Slow scan in Linear Simulcast
System Platforms Affected: APCO 25 Trunked or Conventional Simulcast
Special Configurations: N/A
User Symptom: When scanning LSM sites, XTS/XTL radios may unmute late or not at all
Description: This firmware issue has been fixed. A codeplug workaround is also
available that prevents the problem from occurring.

CPS Release Notes
ASTRO SPECTRA Plus/XTS 5000, 4000, 2500, 1500/MT1500/PR1500/XTL 5000,
2500, 1500/PM1500/HPD1000 Customer Programming Software (CPS)
New Version: R17.00/00
Old Version: R16.01.00
Important Notes:

Abstract: Tutorials Updated
Description: When support for Vista was added, the tutorials and HELP engine were
updated to a new format. Modifications to the new HELP format require Microsoft
Internet Explorer version 6 or above. Microsoft began shipping Internet Explorer
version 6 in 2001. Thirteen of the online HELP tutorial files have been converted
from an AVI format (.avi) to the Adobe Flash (.swf) format. The .avi to .swf
conversion saves over 250 megabytes of disk space. All tutorial lessons are now in
the Flash format. These tutorial lessons require Flash Player version 6 or above to
be installed. Flash version 6 was first shipped in 2002. Release 12 contains
approximately 60 tutorial lessons requiring about 70 MB of disk space. The
tutorials are always installed in a “\Tutorials” subfolder for each of the CPS
applications. It is strongly recommended to install the tutorials with this new
version of the CPS. Previous tutorial versions are not recognized by R12.00.00 and
later CPS. Due to the size reduction, tutorials are now available for download
from Motorola Online. This file is separate from the CPS download.

Abstract: Tutorial Installation
Description: If both portable and mobile CPS's are used, it is recommended to
update both at the same time, and tutorials should be installed with BOTH versions.
Abstract: POP25 compatibility
Description: The POP25 feature is NOT supported under the VISTA operating system.

Abstract: The default path for the Software System Key files has been changed
System Platforms Affected: Any
Special Configurations: N/A
Description: The default path for the Software System Key files has been changed
The previous location was: <COMMONFILES> ...\Program Files \ CommonFiles \ Motorola
\ SysKeys. The new location is: <CommonAppData> ...\ All Users \ Application Data
\ Motorola \ SysKeys.

New Features:

Abstract: All new radio features supported
System Platforms Affected: Any
Special Configurations: N/A
Description: All new radio features added in this release are supported.

Abstract: Secure Connection between CPS and ARS
System Platforms Affected: Any
Special Configurations: N/A
Description: When performing POP25 Operations (for both batch mode and single
radio programming), the CPS now supports communicating with the Automatic
Registration Service (ARS) via a secure connection for the purpose of protecting
sensitive radio information, such as the IP address of the radio and whether it is
present on the system.

Abstract: Increased number of zones/channels on XTS1500/2500 Model 1.5
System Platforms Affected: Any
Special Configurations: N/A
Description: The XTS1500 and XTS2500 Model 1.5 now support 16 Zones/256 Channels

Abstract: Write Protection can now be disabled
System Platforms Affected: Any
Special Configurations: N/A
Description: The CPS can now disable Write Protection in radios as long as the same
Advanced System Key that was used to Write Protect the radios is attached and
loaded.

Issue Updates:

Abstract: Radio displays “Key fail” and does not unmute to Secure calls
System Platforms Affected: Analog trunking with encryption (SecureNet)
Special Configurations: N/A
User Symptom: Radio displays “Key fail” and does not unmute to Secure calls in
analog Trunking radios with Multikey. After several keyups, the radio may begin
working, but the process starts over after a power cycle.
Description: This CPS issue has been fixed.
Known Problems:

Abstract: Window style issue
Description: Drop down items in table fields cannot be accessed when using the
Windows XP Professional "Windows XP Style" display.
Work around: If this issue is encountered, change the display setting to "Windows
Classic Style" for proper functionality.

Abstract: Communication from multiple sources
Description: Attempting to Read from or Write to a radio with the CPS while the
Tuner, Data Link Manager, or synchronization software for a PDA is open and
communicating with a radio will cause a communication failure.
Work around: None

Abstract: Problem with French version of Windows
Description: Due to French import law, the Microsoft encryption support used to
create archive (.cpg) files with the CPS (Customer Programming Software) is not
available on the French version of the Windows Operating Systems. Therefore, there
is no way to save archive files when the CPS is installed on the French version of
Windows. Until import laws are changed such that Microsoft can provide encryption
support, this issue cannot be addressed.
Work around: None

Abstract: Problem closing dialog box
Description: Under Tools->FLASHport->Read Radio Configuration, if you attempt to
close the dialog box by pressing the 'X' in the upper right of the dialog while the
application is still busy (the cursor is shaped like an hourglass), the application
may terminate.
Work around: None

Abstract: Memory issue
Description: Memory issues have been reported when 3 or more sessions of the CPS
are open at the same time.
Abstract: Please install first
Description: Please install the CPS before attempting to connect a radio to the PC
using the USB cable.

Abstract: Incompatibility with Logitech Mouseware, version 9.76
Description: If Logitech MouseWare version 9.76 is installed on the PC, it causes
Tools>Reports to fail and enter corrupt data in the registry. This occurs when an
ampersand is entered as part of a Zone/Channel name.
Work around: If the MouseWare is either removed or upgraded to MouseWare version
9.79.1 or later, the problem is resolved.

Abstract: Communication errors during CPS read/write
Description: On rare occasions, communication errors might be encountered during
radio read/write. If this happens, reset the radio and try again.
Abstract: PDA application doesn’t support HPD
Description: Reading/programming of the HPD1000 data radio is not supported by the
PDA application.

Abstract: Advanced System Key fails to load
Description: If an Advanced System Key fails to load, close the currently open
codeplug and reopen it. The System Key should be active, even though an error
message may appear.
Work around: None

Abstract: 'Initialize' message on ASK
Description: When formatting an Advanced System Key, the 'Initialize' message may
appear several times. Please select 'Cancel' to proceed.
Work around: None

Abstract: POP25 operations which cannot be cancelled
Description: Once a read or write codeplug operation via POP25 is started, the
process can't be cancelled. Depending on the size of codeplug, this process could
take 3 to 8 minutes to complete.
Work around: None

Abstract: Invalid Codeplug Caution
Description: Please avoid saving an invalid codeplug with "~" characters in table
fields. Doing so may cause the application to terminate.

Abstract: Communications error during cloning of HPD1000
Description: If a communications error is encountered when attempting to Clone HPD
1000 radios (mostly while running in Windows 2000), then in the CPS under View ->
Options -> Timer Options tab, change the value of 'Clone/Read/Write Timer(sec)'
field to '5' or higher.

Abstract: Communications error during FLASHport
Description: If a communications error is encountered when attempting to FLASHport
update radios, in the CPS, under View -> Options -> Timer Options tab, change the
values of 'FLASHport Timer' fields to '40' or higher
Work around: None

Abstract: FailSoft Connect Tone not ASK protected
Description: ‘FailSoft Connect Tone' field can only be Advanced System Key
protected if 'Connect Tone' is also protected. Specific protection for this field
is not supported.
Work around: None.

Abstract: Voice Files and POP25
Description: Voice Files do NOT get copied when using POP25 feature, as their size
would make the codeplug load take too long.
Work around: Add Voice Files when directly connected to radio.

Abstract: Preset Zone and Channel Enable and DTMF mic
Description: "Preset Zone and Channel Enable" should NOT be enabled when using a
DTMF mic.
Work around: None

Abstract: Help files may not open
Description: Help files may not open after importing a .csv file using the Import
function. If this occurs, close and re-open CPS for the help files to open
successfully.
Work around: None

Abstract: Long codeplug archive names
Description: Codeplug archive names should not exceed 30 characters on Windows 7
and VISTA installations.
Work around: None

Abstract: Network Radio Programmer on Win 7 64-bit machines
Description: Users of Network Radio Programmer on Windows 7 64-bit machines may see
a “Program Compatibility Assistant” popup displayed during installation. This is
due to Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 compatibility issues with those machines.
After continuing the installation by clicking the “Run Program” button on the
popup, the Network Radio Programmer feature can still be used on the machine.
Work around: None

Abstract: Control Head Sync
Description: the Control Head Sync “Choose Radio Configuration” dialogue box does
not fit on all screen resolutions.
Work around: None

Abstract: Read/Write Caution
Description: Attempting to read from or write to a radio with the CPS before the
radio has enumerated will cause a communication failure.
Work around: Please wait for radio enumeration to complete before attempting CPS
operations.

FW 17 is completely screwed up. It took me about 30 minutes to upgrade a 2500. CPS17 took about 20 minutes to just read the codeplug.

HOST version upgraded to R17.00.00 just fine, but DSP got upgraded to R16.50.20. What the hell Moronola!

I just did 3 radios. 2 of the 3 I had to do a forced bootload recovery due to communication issues that caused the firmware to go invalid in the radio. Be careful if you haven't done it or might want to avoid it all together. You might just want to wait until 17.00.01 CPS or firmware to come out.

In the end all 3 are ok, but I sure was swearing to myself after the first radio.

I didn't have any issues that Tim described above, but something sure isn't right even though a Model 1.5 is no longer limited to 96 modes. :-)

It's Host R11.00.00 all over again.. I would say if you don't need to update, hold off for the .01 or .02.

Stupidity creates job security!

If your radio has old firmware, programming it with the latest CPS will not add any new features unless you have the latest firmware to match..

CPS = Customer Programming Software, Not CPS Software.

Did you have any issues with the DSP being upgraded to 16.50.20 instead of the correct version of 17.00.00? I have seen this issue is pretty much universal.

Not that I was able to tell. It still talks so I'm not sure exactly what issues I would see operationally. I did see that the DSP isn't 17 and was kinda confused at that one.

I suspect the 16.50.20 DSP actually is the "17.00.00" DSP, they just forgot to change the version number. If you look at the feature set, alot of it was introduced in APX 7.00.00. I wonder if they are trying to consolidate the version numbers as close as possible.

ie 17.00.00 matches 7.00.00 etc...

Or trying to brick as many ASTRO25 radios as possible... gee, we'd love to fix that under flat rate for you but it's going to be $BIGNUM... maybe you'd just like to buy some APXs instead? 8)

What I think Ko is referring to is a bug with some older RAM processors and newer firmware. Sometimes the radio's alert/keypad tones would "stutter" sounding like anywhere from 2 to 5 key presses in rapid succession (almost like an echo), but the radio otherwise functions normally. Usually a restart of the radio fixes the problem temporarily, but it always comes back. I've seen this a couple times on XTS5000's that people want repaired.
