4 :)

the 8meg will let you update your HOST to the latest and greatest. 4meg your automatically stuck at something older. DSP will update for both..

I believe Motorola is done supporting 4MEG radios, meaning no more DSP upgrades either.

Unless your using advanced features, don't worry about it. DSP's usually can still be flashed, just the HOST cannot. I want to say that last MAJOR big uplift in DSP stuff was back in the ASTRO Saber days when it went to DSP8...but I personally haven't heard any major audio differences in the ASTRO25 line.

This is the best cut/paste I can do from the current excel sheet of the release notes:

Radio Release Notes – Subscriber 6.17 (SR7.11.5)– Jan 2012
XTS 5000, 4000, 2500, 1500/MT1500/PR1500/XTL 5000, 2500,

further additions are planned. 4M radios include ASTRO Spectra Plus with old
version Vocon board and XTS2500, XTS1500, MT1500 and PR1500 radios with model
numbers ending in ‘AN’. ASTRO Spectra Plus radios with new Vocon board will be
upgraded to R09.20.42 Host, R16.00.02 DSP and R05.07.15 UCM. This will occur
automatically; personnel FLASHing radios will not need to be aware of which Vocon
board is present.
New Features:
Abstract: Mixed Vote Scan feature supported
System Platforms Affected: Conventional Multi-cast
Special Configurations: N/A
Description: The mixed vote scan feature supports a combination of Conventional and
Voting scan modes such that a mixed scan list can be programmed that contains both
conventional and voting scan members. Previously, Conventional scan and Vote scan
operation were mutually exclusive.
Abstract: GPS Location on Conventional PTT supported
System Platforms Affected: Conventional with Data
Special Configurations: GPS-capable microphone attached; portable radios supported.
Description: The feature adds the capability to send a GPS location report on PTT
release while on a Conventional APCO channel. To prevent audio throughput delay or
voice truncation, the location report is generated after PTT is released and the
data packet follows the voice transmission. PTT trigger can be used along with
other location report triggers (Emergency, distance, etc).
Abstract: ASTRO Conventional TG now can be modified through FPP on XTS
System Platforms Affected: Conventional
Special Configurations: Keypad-equipped XTS5000 and XTS2500
Description: The feature addition provides the ability to create/modify Astro
Conventional TalkGroups using Front Panel Programming. The number of ASTRO
Conventional TalkGroups has been increased from 96 to 256, and the number of
Conventional TalkGroup lists increased from 6 to 16.
Issue Updates:
Abstract: Slow scan in Linear Simulcast
System Platforms Affected: APCO 25 Trunked or Conventional Simulcast
Special Configurations: N/A
User Symptom: When scanning LSM sites, XTS/XTL radios may unmute late or not at all
Description: This firmware issue has been fixed. A codeplug workaround is also
available that prevents the problem from occurring

And for 16.00.01:

Old Version: Host – R09.20.28, DSP – R15.00.00
CPS Version: R16.01.00
Important Notes:
Abstract: 4Meg memory radios will stay at R09.xx.xx
System Platforms Affected: System independent
Special Configurations: N/A
Description: As of this release, when radios are FLASHed, they will be upgraded to
version R16.00.01 Host, R16.00.01 DSP, and R05.07.15 UCM (if applicable). This is
true EXCEPT for all ASTRO Spectra Plus with old version 4Meg Vocon board, and
XTS2500, XTS1500, MT1500 and PR1500 radios with model numbers ending in ‘AN’. All
of these are 4MB memory radios which can not accommodate the size of R10 and beyond
Host firmware releases. These radios will get a Host version of R09.00.41.
ASTRO Spectra Plus with new Vocon board will be upgraded to R09.20.41 Host,
R16.00.01 DSP and R05.07.15 UCM. This will occur automatically; personnel FLASHing
radios will not need to be aware of which ones are 4MB radios.
Abstract: Last release where 4M updates will be made
System Platforms Affected: System independent
Special Configurations: N/A
Description: This is the last release where defect repairs will be added to the 4M
radios. The program memory space on these radios has been consumed, and no further
additions are planned. 4M radios include ASTRO Spectra Plus with old version Vocon
board and XTS2500, XTS1500, MT1500 and PR1500 radios with model numbers ending in
‘AN’.
New Features:
Abstract: FireGround Accountability feature now supported in XTL5000 and 2500
System Platforms Affected: Conventional Digital
Special Configurations: FireGround feature active
Description: Fireground integrates Motorola’s radios with state-of-the-art incident
command software to automatically and electronically monitor emergency responders’
working assignments, which provides a better means for personnel accountability.
Fireground also provides additional enhancements to expand responders’ capabilities
beyond the standard “talk and listen” features.
Abstract: XTL5000/2500 100% duty cycle supported at VHF and UHF R2
System Platforms Affected: Any
Special Configurations: None
Description: Temperature cutback is adjusted to support 100% duty cycle at 40W
maximum power in a constant 25C temperature environment. Supported bands are VHF
and UHF R2(450-520 MHz).
Enhancements:
Abstract: CAN (Controller Area Network) Bus failure mitigation
System Platforms Affected: Any
Special Configurations: XTL with O3 control head
User Symptom: Mobile radio can be keyed up but no audio is transmitted.
Description: In the event of CAN bus (interface between the transceiver and the
control head) failure, this change provides restart of the bus protocol as soon as
the source of bus bit errors is removed, rather than waiting for a power cycle.
Bus bit errors could be caused by noise on the interface, loose connections, or
cable failure.
Issue Updates:
Abstract: Power-up codeplug corruption error (Fail 01/82) resolved
System Platforms Affected: Any
Special Configurations: N/A
User Symptom: Occasional Fail 01/82 messages on subscriber display. Radio is nonoperational
and requires Depot service to recover.
Description: This firmware issue has been resolved. It is a very old issue which,
on rare occasions, would trigger a Fail 01/82 message at power-up.
Abstract: No Hot Mic audio through DVRS while outbound call in progress
System Platforms Affected: P25 Trunked
Special Configurations: DVRS in use
User Symptom: If an outbound call is in progress being proxied through the DVRS and
a portable unit takes over that call with an inbound Emergency, the Emergency Alarm
will go through, but the Emergency Hot Mic audio will not be heard.
Description: This firmware issue has been resolved. The DVR “Inbound Digital
Takeover Enabled” Tweaker field needs to be set. This feature is available in DVR
firmware version 3.30 and later.
Abstract: XTL5000 with attached DVRS may reset during call takeover
System Platforms Affected: P25 Trunked
Special Configurations: DVRS in use; hardware encryption in use in the mobile radio
User Symptom: If a portable call is being proxied through the DVRS and the mobile
connected to the DVRS is keyed several times in succession, it may reset.
Description: This firmware issue has been resolved.
Abstract: During a call in progress, DVRS mode change will not be sent to the
system
System Platforms Affected: P25 Trunking
Special Configurations: DVRS in use with “Trunking Status Send Enabled” set in the
Tweaker software.
User Symptom: If the MSU (XTL-5000 Mobile attached to a DVRS) is monitoring an
outbound call in progress, a mode change on the DVRS will not be send to the
system.
Description: This firmware issue has been resolved.
Abstract: UCM firmware or algorithm upgrades via FLASHport or KVL may fail
System Platforms Affected: P25 Trunking
Special Configurations: OTAR enabled with confirmed registration
User Symptom: UCM firmware or algorithm upgrades attempted via FLASHport or KVL may
fail to complete.
Description: This firmware issue has been resolved. The OTAR task will now be shut
down during UCM upgrades and will not interrupt them.
Abstract: XTL5000 not affiliating to the system
System Platforms Affected: 3600 Trunking
Special Configurations: Omnilink system
User Symptom: XTL5000 would not affiliate to the trunked network and would not
switch from a site with poor signal to a site with a higher RSSI value.
Description: This was a very complex issue involving Control Channel frequency
reuse on adjacent sites, site access denial, and roaming across Zones in an
Omnilink system. It should not be assumed that this change will affect other
existing roaming problems without first establishing root cause.
Abstract: Multiple issues with slow roaming, affiliation and missed calls
System Platforms Affected: 9600 Trunking
Special Configurations: Harris Corp. P25 Trunked FNE, configured in Explicit
Channel Assignment mode
User Symptom: Multiple issues with slow roaming, slow affiliations and missed
calls, especially in fringe coverage areas or when using SmartZone. This issue is
only seen when the FNE is not Motorola equipment. This change was made in a
previous release on XTS and XTL 8M models, and is now being made on the 4M models.
4M radios include ASTRO Spectra Plus with old version Vocon board and XTS2500,
XTS1500, MT1500 and PR1500 radios with model numbers ending in ‘AN’.
Description: This firmware issue has been resolved. Note that the “Motorola
Proprietary Features” checkbox must be unchecked in the radio's codeplug to invoke
the solution.
