XTL5000 Rear programming Cable - Ignition Sense/Emer???

Post by g8tzl2004 »

I am building a simple straight thru serial programming cable for the XTL5000.

The 5 programming pins on the accessory socket are 1 (GND), 4(TXD), 5(RXD), 10(CTS) and 11(RTS)

BUT do I also need to include a pin 15( Emergency) to pin 14(GND) link as well as pin 25 (Ignition sense) to +12v

I'm thinking that I probably do? The XTL5000 does not power up without the Ignition sense pin being connected to +12v

What pins are connected on a real rear serial prog lead?

Thanks

As no one else has jumped in, I will add a simple comment about the emergency line. Not knowing how the radio is programmed to use the emergency line, it is always good to ground it when using bench cables or programming cables. This way you will not cause the radio to go into the emergency mode if the radio is programmed for that function.

Thanks Jim.

I almost PM'ed you as when I was researching the archives I read that you had built your own rear accessory serial prog cable.

I wonder if you could check your pin outs. I guess you connected the Emergency line (15) to GND (14) as well as the Ignition sense (25) to +12v. Do you know whether there is a pin on the accessory socket which gives +12v so you don't need to run a long red wire to the PSU? Did you also wire up the speaker?

I think most radios must be programmed at the factory to bypass the ignition sense. I've read that many users cut off the red wire from the accessory plug. Its just as well my accessory plug had the red wire as my radio was dead before I connected up the ignition sense!!!

Thanks

It's been a while since I last looked at this thread. With the Batlabs site not providing any new information for the last several years, the repeater builder site does have some information. The rear accessory connector on the mid power XTL5000 is the same as the XTL1500. You can use this link and go to page 3-9 and get the view of the rear accessory connector.

Thanks Jim - very useful info.

I'm surprized that there is not more discussion about how easy it is to just homebrew a rear prog cable as its just a straight thru cable with no RS232/TTL level conversion - I guess there must not be that many hams with XTL5000's...yet!!!!

With regard to the XTL1500, I actually like the concept of an internal front facing speaker rather than an external speaker with all the wires etc. Why did Moto not supply an "XTL1500" head which does, say, 250 channels rather than only 48 and also has more front keys so that you can prog all the useful features???

Because they still have to get good audio and you just can't stick that much into a DIN size head. It's been that way for a long time (think MCS2000 and Spectra) Remember this was the bottom tier Astro radio for a while. If you wish, the 1500 can be upgraded to 512 modes and use the DTMF mic to access certain other features.

Does the number of channels effect the space inside the head?

My Moto Model 1 MCS2000 is really nice but its such a pity it only has 48 rather than 160 channels like my Model 2 and 3 stuff.

Is there a mod to flash update the XTL1500 into a 512 channel radio but still use the XTL1500 head so you can use the front speaker?

The MCS2000 M1 can be flashed for 255 modes, and the XTL1500 can be flashed for 512 modes. No hardware is involved. These are line item options, have been available since the radios were born.

Thanks - very interesting that an MCS2000 M1 can be flashed for 255 channels.

I might flash my XTL5000 into an XTL1500 although I guess you could just use a speaker mic with my XTL5000 in order to avoid messing with an external speaker and all the wires. I have a couple of non-Motorola radios which use speaker mics and the audio from the speaker mic is very poor.

Anybody have any views on the quality of the audio from an XTL speaker mic?

Didn't know there was a speaker mic that could be used on an XTL. Tell me more.

Jim - It looks like a DTMF speaker mic. I've only seen pics in brochures. I think its designed for the O5 head.

That's just a mic. It has no speaker
