It requires a KVL3000+ or better with a flash upgrade card in it to add the algorithm to the radio. If you have a KVL3000+, you should be able to order a flash upgrade card for it and flash the radio for AES256.

only KG1 ADP in the radio now , so I need a KVL3000+ and a flash card to add AES256 algorithm option?

Correct. Even with the AES-256 option in the radio, it's useless if you don't have a keyloader to insert the key with. ADP is the ONLY algorithm that can be keyloaded with CPS. All of the other algorithms (DVP, DVI, DES, AES and their variants) all require an external keyloader to load the keys.

That external keyloader for the APX would be the KVL3000+ or KVL4000. I don't know what the algorithm flash procedure is for the KVL4000, but with the KVL3000+, you order a flash upgrade card from Motorola, insert the card into the keyloader, and then "flash" the radio to tell it that it has AES.

How much for a flash upgrade card? and the card can do unlimited upgrade?

No, the card doesn't do unlimited upgrades. Only the number of upgrades paid for.

This is somewhat beyond my area of expertise (pricing/ordering), so I'd refer you to escomm at this point here on the board. Jeffrey, comments?

It's about $800 for a single AES upgrade...approx $150 for the PCMCIA card and $650 for the upgrade. These are Canadian MSRP prices, so you may find slightly different pricing if you get a dealer quote. But, it's expensive no matter what.

All done in software now. Upgrade file ships on a CD-ROM, encrypted, and keyed to the KVL's serial number. You use Windows Mobile Device Center to sync to the PDA, and after that you can use the file copy utility on the CD to load the file or copy/paste it manually. Upgrades to the KVL itself are done the same way.

Good to know. Haven't had to deal with this, but nice to know the gist of the procedure. Thanks!
