By issuing the reload command you wiped out any changes made since the configuration was saved by "write memory" or "copy running-config startup-config".
Yes, I already know basic things like this and always do WR, SHUT, NO SHUT and RELOAD even when it's not mandatory. And I often check SH RUN output reload (just to be sure that all I need is effective). So, problem is not here.
Experiment. Change e-lead to m-lead and test.
I have tested Type V and temporary stopped experiments with 2650xm. Because it doesn't work also, but must work with no PTT. I got working new type of link, em-imd, but still no voice. Checked all E&P pairs in all 4 combinations, and nothing. And as more I play, as more I accepts Alex's warning about VIC2 card in pre-2800 device. In theory, they are compatible, but in practice?
The family of "show" commands can display different status parameters in the router. You would have to "show xxx" when idle, then another "show xxx" after you close the COR switch. If that shows nothing useful, try another show command. This is now beyond my ability to help, it's down to experimenting if Cisco docs don't help.
I agree with you in theory. But there are 1 few problems here. I am not CLI expert. I don't know what must change when COR/COS/PTT state changes. If it doesn't change only on my setup, I will never find what I am looking for. SO, it's better to find what changes normally on good working setup and share with me. It will really help. But now I worry that I will never find it, because I am "blunder in the dark". I am not native English speaker, but hope that it's still clear for all of you guys.
There's also the possibility that the version of iOS firmware in the router does not support the features that you need, although I would expect error messages when you add those commands.
I don't think so, because I was pointed to this version and edition by guys who already tried on 2600 classical series and 2600xm. And it's feature-top edition know as AES (Advanced Enterprise Services). It's not V15, but V12.4.25. But it's fresh and must do the same things as V15.
That's why I recommended that you add them one line or one small block of commands at a time to observe any error messages emitted by the router.
I always act like this. I enter commands line by line and always watch for output. And only if nothing was wrong, enter multiply commands from buffer. So, I do not copy/paste anything in bulk. Be sure :)

Yes, I remember that. And I can't stop thinking abut it. It's a reson why I am working on IOS installation (to USB removable drive) to 2811 :) I want to check "right" platform with "right" cards before I make wrong conclusion(s).
Edit: Also keep in mind these were "new" in 1998 or thereabouts - probably a few years later for the "XM" series. You are dealing with some old stuff by now so age/software updates/etc., can't be helping either....
Yes, totally agree. It's a reason why I just obtained pair of 2811, c2800nm-adventerprisek9-mz.151-4.M12a.bin and running them now.

Another fun challenge with Cisco:

The CF cards and USB sticks they are pretty particular about brands/manufacturers. They have something in the OS/Bootloader that only allows certain manufacturers cards to really work. You may also run in to some challenges with filesystems. The best way to setup one of the cards or a USB stick is to use Cisco IOS to format them. Then put the IOS on there via TFTP/SCP/etc.

I have good luck with Sandisk.

Alreay did it. Inserted and formatted by IOS. Cheap USB 2.0 flash for 2 GB. 322 seconds to reload most current IOS V15.1.4. Not bad.

are not suppoted by IOS 12.x. But suppoted by 15.x. Just figured this out on 2811 with 2 different OS versions. So, problem is not in hardware as it explained on other web site.

The dial-peer for the router should point to the other router. So if you are on 1.141 your session targets should point to 1.142 and vice versa.

Good point on the unsupported commands as well. I knew there was another reason for the 28xx vs the 26xx for doing this work.

Thanks, Alex.

I already fixed the addressing. It was just a 1 mistype and not a big (because both routers can call and receive calls; so, if initial call fails, another router will call back and vice versa).

But I am in the same situation as before. Routers now model 2811 with IOS 15, but still nothing working as it should. I can get working any link I need, Type 2 or Type 5. One codec or another. I do COS/COR signals and see proper current (7 mA; mist be greater than 3 mA), but I still see no audio via network. DSP shows busy state and packet count for ports used, but still no audio.

Also I switched to M-Lead instead of E-Lead, because as far as I found out, M-Lead is for COR/COS. Meanwhile, when I ground pin # 2 or short pins 1&2, and see no changes on other side. No audio, no PTT stated changes.

All 4 audio transformers, installed in EM cards, looks OK and shows 65 Ohm each at DC. SB provides -48.5 VDC well. "bootup e-lead off" and "no bootup e-lead off" commands works properly (in the second case I see 23 Ohm equivalent resistance on ping 7&8 during ISR reload). So, I can't tell that something wrong with E/M ports. Also, I see proper voltage changes when I change trunking Type (e.g. M-Lead become -48 VDC in Type 5, but SB become GND).

I have only some crazy ideas:

1. That ISRs needs routing enabled or some other IP core parameter(s);
2. That something was changed by jumper settings (not sure they are existing in this HW or not);
3. I need VoIP edition of IOS, but not AES;
4. Brand new E/M cards are fakes or "fried" (but I was the first person who touched them; they were new and w/o any fingerprints).
5. E/M ports have some "presence" sensors (seen nothing about in papers, but who why not?).

Now I want to find a new and fresh ideas what to do next. E.g.:

1. Recording audio from DSP by software to be sure that audio is inside and passed ADC properly.
2. To find COS/COR/PTT triggers (or their indicators) in console;
3. To run voice trunk inside one router, between 2 of E/M cards (just to be sure that they are OK);
4. To ensure that audio is above than VAD threshold (if enabled).
5. To ensure that M-Lead/E-Lead configured to provide expected results (Cisco's tables 3-10, 3-11 and 3-12 looks monstrous and I am not sure which one is valid for regular trunking, but not multicast, unicast or PLAR).

If you can help with something, please do. I am totally exhausted and definitely will stop this project soon until any progress. I am not made of steel...

Looks like 2811_1 port 0/0/0 is sending voice (TRUE), but 2811_2 port 0/0/0 is NOT receiving for a some reason (FALSE).

So:

I can confirm that the advipservices image works fine for LMR.

Try doing the following - just this command. Change all your ports and add the dial peer number along with it. Do not trigger or do anything with the E/M pins. This should come up and pass audio heard on pins 3/7 and heard on the other router out pins 4/5.

Another thing to test as an experiment is to disable VAD. Ensure you have no vad in both the dial peer and the voice-port configuration. This will take 64k (+ over head) in both directions between the routers which on a local network is fine. Maybe a level or something is off and your not getting good audio through the router giving you the illusion it's down (?). I'm just thinking out loud.

I did it. No luck. And small correction - you must send audio from LMR to ISR to the "green pair", pins 3&6. But not 3&7 as stated above. Receive pins (ISRs audio output to LMR) are 4&5, aka "blue pair".
Make sure you do a shut/no shut after configuration.
I do that every time or even write-reload. But no luck.
You should see the trunk ports then come up on both routers and you should be passing the audio.
All ports up, but audio is not passing.

BTW, I found some interesting voice test commands, like relay, tone generator, etc. and working with them. Now I am able to generate 1000 Hz sine internally by DSP, but it can't be heard by other side (only locally). But now I got some new tools to dive deeper.

Hardware is cooperating acoordingly to all diag commands (Cisco offers to test trunks by checking their status - it must be S_CONNECT; like mine), but no sound. It could be because you tested this card with Quantars or something, they provide proper PTT/COS levels and audio level. Just a version.

Unfortunately, it doesn't help. Tried voice-port no vad only and voice-port no vad + voip peer no vad. Always did shut / no shut after that. No luck. But I see that ISRs always doing something, because blinks constantly by ACT LED. Looks like they are exchanges with traffic even when silence frames.

Meanwhile, my E/M cards able to produce local tones on pins 4&5, tested by "test voice port 0/0/0 inject-tone local 1000Hz" command. I got 1.6V RMS pure sine at my scopemeter. But "test voice port 0/0/0 inject-tone network 1000Hz" shows nothing on remote ISR. But this test confirms that E/M cards, DSP and IOS are OK.

Now all looks like relay/signaling issue. Because equipment doesn't want to open "pass" for a some reason. During reading Cisco papers, I found that there are 2 mechanisms for this. Physical signaling (voltages on *-Leads) and logical signaling (send by digital ot DTMF). Also, there a some configuration ABCD bits ( see this https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/w ... #wp1052030 ). All of these can open or close "path" and sometimes can provide contradictory commands/states (per Cisco). So, I am preyy sure that problem is here.

The only question, how you guys avoided all these problems without encountering them, but I am drowning in this swamp for 5 days :o

Now is the most interesting test, it's to make a loopback connection between E/M ports of the same E/M card. There is a special cable know as rollover. Its pinout simple – just all outs crossed with all ins:

Audio lines cross doesn’t matter, because they are all connected via symmetrical transformers.

Sounds easy, but I have no ideas how to test this config if I don’t have a VOIP phone. How I can send DTMF digits and receive them? Where I can see DTMF echo? I have no ideas. But this test looks great, because can draw a line between internal and external factors of failure. For more details please read this manual, "Use Rollover Cable for E&M Port-to-Port Testing" section.

Guys, could you please supply guaranteed to work IOS image name of V15 branch? Exact file name or exact version, please? I mean in case of LMR Type II. Some Cisco guy is investigating my setup and asked about this, because he have come across with situations when some features declared, but not working actually. Thanks!

I have tried and suspect my experimentation was flawed to begin with (e.g. using Verizon 4G and Comcast to start vs playing with a direct ethernet cable).

I suspect it might work with VERY low latency transport. If you read the E&M spec's it calls out a standing 200ms delay for the voice audio. I don't know if that's the case (I have been meaning to time this out using the TIMS test sets I have) but the AstroTac I think wants to see vote times <100ms. I don't know if that value is a known or published value.

I think the other issue you may hit is the cards are only rated for 200-3000hz and the Astro Modems may also operate outside those ranges a bit.

G711ULAW does not like modems either I suspect. You might be able to get away with it with PCM.

Bottom line - you will have to play and I wouldn't have faith.

Thanks, Alex. But I want to be sure before go further. Because I got voice working over E&M cards in both directions (the root of previous problems remains unexplained). Now I see pure sine in at the both ends when I inject it (tone passes network with no problems). But when I switch from Hybrid to Astro Modems link, I see threir "music" at the both ens by the scope, but they can't establish connection. They are only blinking by LEDs and buzzing over E/M line. LAN connection with round trip from 1 to 4 ms. Tried different modem levels, but no luck.

I haven't dug in to this much mainly because the v24 and E&M works, making the astro modems work kind of went out the window. I suspect you are going to have a timing issue since the E&M cards will delay the audio stream to the point the modems are unlikely to sync. You can try different codec's:

There's another protocol that Cisco has where it will cause the E&M cards to handshake to the device on either end and encode the bitstreams. You may want to try clear-channel if ti's supported in E&M. I have a pair of Convex TIMS sets which can measure delay in audio circuits for Simulcast. I have never played with the feature but have always been curious to see what the delays would be between the E&M ports.

Hi all!

What is the right way to enable VAD for Analog only or Hybrid link? To save on traffic. Looks like one clear-channel link consumes 60GB/month in one direction, or 120GB totally (in both directions). It might be in issue where you use ISP tariffs with monthly traffic limit.

What is the right place to enable VAD in Cisco ISR? Voice-port or Dial peer? Or both? I don’t care about possible troubles with signaling in analog portion of link, because V.24 is used for signaling.

You need it in both spots I believe (dial-peer and voice-port). Try another codec as well. Do you see a difference with G729 vs G711 that's noticeable? Keep in mind if there is a status or pilot tone at all times it is going to chew bandwidth regardless, just, less because the codec applies more compression.

Vad & Vad aggressive I think are the two options you can play with.

Reading above I know you were testing the E&M waters, but, is it possible to simply E&M in a receiver on an AstroTac (I think no, but, can't hurt to think it through).

To dig up an old thread, Does anyone have 2 working configs I can dumb into some routers and use, I have a need for a tone remote to control an offsite repeater over a ubiquiti link its about 1500 ft.

I can get whatever E/M cards and routers that you have this working on but I have read this thread over and over and just dont see what to get to make it work.

Wanted to add something for this old thread. If your are interconnecting multiple remote sites together with a DMVPN then YOU MUST enable pim nbma mode on your tunnel interface that the dmvpn is occurring on. In short multicast relies RFP (reverse path forwarding). That revers e path forwarding gets broken with dmvpn tunnels because gre tunnel interfaces don’t actually flood traffic like a typical multicast/broadcast packet. Thus pim nbma mode similates that functionality for PIM. Not doing this will cause the multicast tree to not fully propagate. Not sure if this is helpful to anybody but figured I’d throw it out there.
