Motorola MT2000 Problem

Post by BPDUnderground »

I am being told that my MT2000 sounds "off frequency" and makes a "PL Hum" when transmitting, along with low audio as if I was using a speaker microphone.

I was told to send it into a shop to have it aligned, tuned, and bench tested.

I know this is a shot in the dark, but does anyone have any ideas what it might be?

It is a UHF model H01SDD9AA4AN.

Sounds like the zero IF offset problem. Let me guess, PL of around 123 Hz?

There is a way the depot can shift the ZIF. Make a list of the PLs you need to use and they can shift it to an area where you will not hear the problem.

No mods as far as I know of.

The PL making the most noise is 151.4.

Seems like all channels sound a little distorted.

Checked and swapped battery and antenna with my "owned since new" HT1000, no change.

It could very well be off-frequency. I had one just the other day, sounded like crap, basically same problems you're describing. Found it to be 3.5KHz off frequency. Once aligned within specs, all was fine.

How does a radio get mis-aligned or off frequency? A few too many drops to the ground???

My HT1000 has been through a lot in the last four years and still looks great and performs flawlessly.

Thanks.

Typically the reference oscillator in the radio drifts low as the radio ages.

As the radio gets older the rate at which it drifts will decrease.

Most of the time I see this problem, some fool has just shuved in a code plug from another radio. This is one of many ways to tottaly mess up ALL the alignment points, compensation and frequency.
If you do not have the correct test equipment to completley realign and compensate the radio, send it to a REAL Motorola tech.. Monty or Will come to mind.

That explains why he wanted me to email him the codeplug for my similarly programmed HT1000 on top of the frequency list I emailed him!

How bad is damage???

I sent the radio to one of the best radio shops in the state, and I am confident that the tech will be able to knock it back into line.

I would not count on that, seen that too many times. They send the radios to me to "fix" and all I have to do is a complete realignment/compensation. I also do a mechanical refurb and then recheck ALL the alignment points.

Give me a break, April/Will. Any monkey can follow the alignment procedures in the manual. I have a hard time believing that an MSS would have to send a radio to you, when all it needs is an alignment. I am one MSS tech that's tired of you lumping all dealers into the "incompetent" category.

The shop I use will fix it w/o sending to the depot, or I am hoping that.

even if they don't send it to the depot it will still come back with the NEWEST rss version in it. unless you have the same version you won't be able to program it.

Todd, you may be able to follow the alignment procedures in the manual, but most of the socalled MSS/Dealer techs can not even do that. This has been my experiance having to "fix" the DEALER'S many f*%(*_# (mistakes). Just because April, Monty, and a few other realy good techs. take the extra time and effort to make sure the radio works properly is no reason to jump on them, or me.
And if you wish, I will send the next one to you to fix! Then I shall see how good it is aligned.

I do fully agree that the Dealer/MSS or Depot will always use the latest RSS is a bad point for some users, and this is a reason to keep the older versions of the licensed RSS available.

What radios do you own?: XTS5000 VHF, M-RK II UHF

Wavetar,
I would be more careful that that. These two for example are some of the best techs on this board BAR NONE!! Will can definitely speak for himself but I know for a fact that he has 40 (Fourty) years of radio repair, alignment, tuning, etc etc. experience.
April is probably in that master level as well and should be highly respected. Me? I'm just a "padowine jedi learner ;) " who is very grateful just to know one! Just keep that in mind...:/

Will, send me any radio you wish, it'll come back fully tuned & tested with my R-2670, as good as or better than you. If you can't tell from my posts that this would be the case, then you'll obviously never think anyone other than yourself is a "real" tech.

To anyone else, I'm sorry if I came across as rude, you know I'm not like that. I help a lot of people on this board, and they will attest to that. But I've put up with Will lumping us all into the "idiot" category for over two years now. That said, I take nothing away from his obvious radio experience. My apologies for not taking it to PM's.

I am running the lastest DOS based RSS.....dated 11/02. I don't have the disk in front of me but I think it is version 6.07.

I hear the Windows version sucks. :x
