XTS5000 Pricing
Someone on the Batboard inquired about pricing on the XTS5000. Based on the current R3 (May, 2003), it ain't cheap. Similar to the high price tag of the XTL5000, it looks like Motorola is counting on the new Homeland Security Department doling out the big bucks to the various Fed Boys to be able to afford to buy these things.
For instance, a 700/800 dual band XTS5000, with dual ASTRO Trunking and ASTRO 25 Trunking capabilities, plus encryption with multikey, will run you $6,151, plus tax and shipping. It can go higher with additional options.
Not bad for Motorla---this means that one XTL5000 mobile and one XTS5000 portable will set you back over $16,000. A guy could almost buy a stripped down Quantar for that!
Of course, don't forget this is a list price, and some customers (especially The Feds) will enjoy discounts.
BTW, I checked the pricing on the VHF and UHF XTS5000 radios and it is the same, or very similar.
I wonder how much money that Motorola ASTRO Marketing Guy makes?!
Larry
P.S. The moral of this story is, unless you really need to handle 3600 AND 9600 baud systems in the same radio, I'd wait a while before dumping your XTS3000 on eBay.

Ours went for around 4k each with DES-OFB and Smartzone. I've tested mine side by side with our older MTS2000's and in a weak signal the MTS2k is a better performer on RX / TX. There is no doubt that it is a neat radio - it just isn't a better product performance wise than what it is replacing. As a side note another agency close by is replacing thier fleet of HT1000's for XTS3000's and the same issues exist in performance. Motorola is not what it used to be.

Most of the Federal Govt won't be using the the 700/800 dual band, but the VHF and UHF (380-470) is the UHF range 1, and pricing looks to be about $4,000 loaded. Also some of the companies that are make the "investigative equipment" are now basically using handhelds as the rx units, I have seen one with an XTS, mates to a plug and sleeve , and also one with the new Bendix. In a nice little Pelican case.

XTS5000 pricing
Is there a web site or other source where list pricing for the XTS5000 and the various options can be perused?
HA! MOL if you are a dealer... Not to mention all that stuff is considered "Above the Price Book" -- Which means the dealer has to request a price for everything you want and Motorola will send the dealer a price... that is if Motorola Direct doesn’t decide to move in on the deal... they seem to let all the small stuff go by for us dealers... They don't waste time with small stuff... unless they are trying to make quota. They generally go after the big stuff... Unless it is an "Agent" deal... but don’t get me started.
All this talk about prices for XTS and Flash features is a bit off. If you are buying one or two, yes, those prices are close. If you are an agency or gov't or big buyer, you will get a much better deal. Something that prices out to 4-5K will probably be 2.5-3.5K on a gov't contract. Mot looks at the big picture and the long term when dealing with the big deals. They look at the potential future sales and the sale of infrastructure. That is where the big bucks are... (List price is just a start in the negotiating process.)
I hope this helps dispel some of the absurd price quotes I keep seeing on the board. And now, to make you feel better, your government is getting a better deal than you are. Yes, we are all getting screwed. Woo hoo. Deal with it. (Now you all know why Nick's radios are such a deal!)

The Feds, and various very big users, typically get a 30% or so discount off list. So, a $6,000 list radio will discount down to about $4,000. But, FLASH uplifts (like IMBE) are normally not discountable, unless it is in the origianl purchase contract.
I think the reason that the sensitivity to pricing came up on the Batboard was that there was a rumor that Motorola was going to introduce a new line of less expensive radios that would handle IMBE. Thus the discussion of prices in the R3. List Price is a good RELATIVE reference point in comparing Motorola radios, since I think we were trying to see if/when a less expensive IMBE product comes along.
BTW, as to the LCD head on the XTL5000, I asked my Motorola Sales Team about this and they said it will be a reality, but the price will be virtually the same as the vacuum flurescent (just a technoplogy change).

P.S. A 30% discount on the new XTL5000 (well over $10,000 equipped, NOT including sales tax and shipping) leaves you with a "discounted" price of something over $7,000 per radio, in quantity. (The deepest discount I'm aware of for a large Gov't Agency was only slightly North of 30%.)
Someone on the board commented that he wondered why people were making a fuss over the prices of the new ASTRO Motorolas. Maybe this IS a big deal, for those of us with businesses slightly smaller than Bill Gates, who also MUST buy these radios in order to compete successfully for certain Gov't contracts.

Not sure about the States, but our company gets 30% off list price, and the Gov't gets a lot more.
Get this though...we were recently preparing a quote for tender, and guess who we were going up against?? Motorola direct. That's bad enough...but then they tell us that they will only give us 20% off list for this particular tender, while they can offer 30%!! Is that even legal? Our sales dept didn't think so...it'll be interesting to see how it turns out. Nice dealer support, big M.

my only question is why would any one pay that much for a radio
how many features do you really need ?????
there are other digital radios on the market arn't there
why in the world should you spend that much on for a device to talk from point a to point b
thats what I would call price gouging
big time
I geuss I just don't get it

guys, I just contacted the motorola radio sales centre here in australia (homebush in Sydney) and asked them how much the xts5000 is.
the Reply
"What is a Motorola XTS5000"
I told them it is a two way radio. their reply
"you must be mistaken, I can put through to the mobile phone devision"
I said, NO the xts5000 is a two way radio available in the USA.
she then says "well sorry then I have no information or have even heard of a xts5000 before, call back in another few months"
talk about NO IDEA

XTS 5 K Radio
The 5 K series are nice, but as with any new products there are bugs.
One I have seen is the limted range in digital mode. Whoops. I hear that a parts was the wrong value. There have also been problems with scanning talkgroups. Software errors.I think that I would wait for a while, like host 5.xxx and DSP around the same range before spending the big bucks. Out here in Phx the locals went to another P-25 vendor for the new system going on line.
